As far a life of the engine, it has alot more to due with type of use and maintenance , rather than just milage.
Five days a week Im pulling 3000 lbs. I know thats nothing but its a lot for my little Ranger. There are scrap metal jobs I take on that I would like to be able to haul a bit more. Also want to be able to pull a tractor or a backhoe around.
If your only towing 3000 lbs regular, find a good used F150. As for towing Backhoes and Big Tractors, your starting to get out of the realistic range of F250/350's, you need to start looking at smaller dump trucks and such.
IMO start looking for a Small 450-550 dump truck, regular pick-up trucks are a waste for real contracting work.

It's missing when it's cold and down on power warm so I expect the ficm or a couple of injectors are at fault. It's starting to lose coolant, so I expect the egr cooler is giving up. I absolutely love that truck, and that's why I'm going to tear into it this fall and spend a week and several thousand dollars doing head studs, oil and egr coolers, stc fitting, turbo cleanout, coolant filter, guages, and anything else it needs or is going to need. It's a shame us Ford guys have to do this stuff just to make the engine comparable to a duramax or cummins, but the truck it's sitting in is why I'll do it. Hell, just not having to pull that abortionate shift lever into gear on the Chev makes it worth while.
a 6.0 tuneup.............

Re: Ford diesels
Yeah, I remember when a tuneup was points, plugs condenser, adjust the mixture screws and curb idle, and check the timing, and cost about 15 bucks if you did it yourself. If you had lots of money, you could take it to a garage and they'd soak you 40 or 50 bucks. Who could afford that? We did it ourselves!

True, tho I would rather grow into a truck like say a F350 then only have a F150 and out grow it.
I guess I should have been more clear on tractors.
Ment like a Ford 8N size tractor but with a bucket and hoe. Or a mini excavator.

My 2001 PSD Excursion has 217,000 on it. I have however, had the transmission out twice, and I'm not very happy with it right now.
I'm goning to drive a new on under it in a couple of years if all goes well. Texas A&M is currently taking my car payments. Whoop, Gig-em!

Come on now, I tired to get that same guy to work on it! I works good 99% of the time, but reacts slowly when going into reverse and then one time going into drive. Then it is perfect until you put it in reverse again.

Re: Ford diesels
yeah, it was rebuilt in OKC with 98,000 miles and then again about 15,000 miles ago. I had all the transgo goodies put in it and a Hughes HD converter. Of course, it didnt start acting up until it started getting hot this summer.
