Valve tip wear
Been working on a 545 with SCJ heads. I've been fighting a constant tick and at closer look found whats in the attached pictures.
The engine has about 7-800 miles on it. Should I be concerned with the wear patterns?

Re: Valve tip wear
I'd put a girdle on it..................
Need to move the guideplates around to better center the rollers on the tips.

Bingo I think every engine used for any performance should have a Rocker Stud Girdle in use....

Re: Valve tip wear
I kinda doubt that you'll find a stud girdle that will fit...with the studs at the wrong angle.javascript:emoticonp('')
Re: Valve tip wear
my A460's did the same thing with girdle's.the studs are not the same angle as the valves and maybe some side load on them.you'd think you would'nt have this kinda problem on shit that cost so much.

Really. So are you saying the stud girdle isn't going to help anything and I jsut have to live with it? What is part number for the SCJ stud girdle?

Re: Valve tip wear
i dont know if the girdles would help but sure they wont hurt.your studs may be the issue,do the rockers ride up on the threads any?looks kinda like they do in the pic's.if so,that wont work too well.ford385 wrote:Really. Re: Valve tip wear
Actually they do ride on the the threads a little. Even the fulkcum has thread marks on the inside of them. Is that not ok? Is it hte studs or the rockers that's the problem? The studs come in teh heads from Ford Motor Sports.

Re: Valve tip wear
call Lem and get some tfs studs and you'll be good on that part.whats your spring psi? cam size? rpm? you may not need a girdle.

Re: Valve tip wear
I wouldn't sweat the riding on the threads, I'd be riggin me up somthin to make sure the studs are straight as mentioned. Once the problem is addressed then yes a girdle is a real good idea. Pics are hard to make out........for me anyway.

Re: Valve tip wear
Was the area in which the hex of the studs machined at all? It could have been a crappy machine job or the studs are bent a little. I don't know, trying to figure it out.

Re: Valve tip wear
i dont think you need girdles, you need studs.IMO.just slide a rocker on the stud where it's been running and see how it moves on the threaded part, then move it on down to the "shank",below the threads, and see how it fits.the tfs studs are longer "shank". call Lem,he'll take care of you.ford385 wrote:Rev limmiter at 6200

Re: Valve tip wear
I did as you said but I'm unable to tell any differnce in the "slop" form the thread area vs. the shank area of the bolt. I did see that even with the rocker pushed all the way down, none of he striaght shank is showing - just threads.

Re: Valve tip wear
I actually have two sets here. The first set said 1.72 and secound set said 1.73; they both said 460 on them. The 1.73 are clearance better around the pushrod side. They seem a little sloppy. When installed I bet they move sided to a good 1/8 inch at the valve tip

Re: Valve tip wear
crap! do you have excessive valve train noise as well, or just the miss alignment? Should I jsut leave it as is then and not worry about cutting the guide plates to get things closer?
