Lem , spark plug pics
Finally specked 3 plugs tuning on the high speed and leaned the main pill as well. M-5 seems to burn cooler (as far as egt's are concerned) than methanol.

Picture 2 looks like it's using about 1/2 the wire ........timing is good in that cyl.
Re: Lem , spark plug pics
pic 1&2 are the same plug as are 3 & 4 a different plug. Timing looks low to me on pic 4 what you think ?

How much did you change the tuneup? M5 will usually be a lttle hotter and want a degree or two less timing.

Re: Lem , spark plug pics
I have not dropped the timing 28.5 * , just keeping an eye on the plugs and I personally think they are fine if not a few cylinders just a tad low on timing.
I think the specking (detonating) of the plugs is a result of a bigger main pill and bigger high speed lean out pill just leaner over all.
From alcohol to m-5 the detonating tune up is alky main pill 125 , m-5 main pill 115 , high speed leanout cracking pressure of 48 lbs and a .070 pill. I think the best tuneup is a 110-105 main pill with the m-5 . You have to figure this stuff by area and fuel percentage not just pill size in general.
I still want to play with the cracking pressure of the high speed leanout , but I have only used a .050 and .060 pill at those main pill settings.
The last outing with the lean tune up the egt's gained on the passenger side 1-4 cylinders and lost temp on the drivers side 5-8 which is normally hotter. This along with the plugs and Travi's s- 10 vac pump pulling less m-5 out of the crankcase is indicating a leaner condition. You will lose heat when you break the lean spot with egt readings.
The tfs intake manifold is more one sided than a victor with only having to pull nozzles sizes out of 5 and 8 cylinder. The #6 cylinder is the hottest on my engine followed by #7, 4,3,2,8,1,5.
I can only guess the reason m-5 burns cooler in my engine is it burns more completely in the combustion chamber instead of the pipe or it may have something to do with them skeeter bites on my pistons

The 2 smallblocks we M5 tuned on the dyno had more dome that your skeeter bites..................
Might have been a carb thing................I do know the carb on M5 showed a good gain on the 529, with the injection it made very little difference if any at all..................but that deal was only 12.8-1

J Y Kelly, the amount of fuel in a given cyl. changes the way the wire looks. Varying the timing in cylinders is not about the timing it's self...it's about "treating" lean or rich cylinders. The correct way to balance the cylinders is working on the manifolding [and maybe nozzle size in you case]............it's easier said than done.
Re: Lem , spark plug pics
Down NOZZLE LEM, whats funny here is #4 is the worst looking plug specking wise , is using less wire , but is the 3rd hottest cylinder. Could this be caused from block/water temp heat ?

Re: Lem , spark plug pics
Is it the hottest cyl or just the hottest pipe? It's all about running fast and not hurting parts......a guy could get all egt's the same and not run faster.
Re: Lem , spark plug pics
Egt is not an absolute to tune by............a good reference after the best et has been established IMO.
Honestly by looking at the egt graphs I think I would get after the converter to hunt down that 4 sec slip.

Re: Lem , spark plug pics
My egt's are within 125* overall 8 . The worst looking plug #4 is 68* cooler than #6 and 29* cooler than #7 so they are very close #6 just needs a bigger nozzle maybe all 3 . Those were the only 3 specking the plugs with # 6 being 1164*. Egt is not all I am watching , but I do have faith in it as a valuable tuning tool.
I don't think there is nothing wrong with the converter I don't have big hp to pull big mph and it would take an astronomical (at this point) amount of mph to make a big difference and over come the 1.05 60 it got with the fat starting line tune up. Its already picked up about 2.5 - 3mph with the high speed adjustments. I would probably put the 4:30 gears in before I changed the converter.

There is quite a bit of difference in the actual angle of the port entry on #6 , 7 and 4 to the opposing cylinders on this tfs intake , have not checked the victor. I know its splitting hairs , but I am looking for the reason.
