460 swap option
Ok guys Im still weighing my options here with a combo for my 91 Mustang LX Coupe. Ive been doin some research on here about the 460 swaps and I like what Ive read about as much as the 351 swaps. Just trying to keep my options open................
Ive been checking around and there is an ABUNDANCE of used 460/C6 combos for sale in my area out of Lincolns, Trucks, and RVS for $500 and under. I was thinking about maybe a 545 stroker.
Keep in mind this will be a street driven/weekend warrior car, maybe see the track in True Street Events twice a year. Itll be driven for the street fun, to the races, etc. all around just a good car to have fun and raise some h*** with. Probably keep it to 6500rpm max shiftpoint. I still want to run 93 octane. What I want is a good musclecar/hotrod to have fun in......... Can you guys give me advise on a combo??????? Id like to see between 550 and 600hp.
460 (possibly a 545 stroker from CHP or should I wait till later?)
Good aluminum head suggestion? (CJ, SCJ, Kasse P-51, Edelbrock RPM or Victor Jr, TFS A460, or Blue Thunder?)
Intake suggestion?
Camshaft suggestion? (flat tappet, hydraulic or solid roller?)
Rocker Arm Suggestion?
Carb size suggestion? (4500 or 4150)
Full exhaust suggestion all the way out the tailpipes?
Fuel Pump Suggestion?
Rebuilt C6 Trans
3:55, 3.73, or 4.10 gears?
MSD Distributor?
Hood size?
Most of the things like lifters and pushrods and the like Im gonna have to buy anyway if I do a 351 swap so Im factoring those in anyway. The only suspension mods done to the car are subframe connectors.
Im tying to budget everything for $10,000 or less. Can this be done if I buy a junkyard motor and trans and build it myself? Will I still be able to use the power sterring pump from the 306?
Will the 460 swap mounts work on the stock Kmember or will I have to get a tubular Kmember?
I talked to a guy tonite who has a 72 460 block bored 30 over ready to be assembled, a seperate 460 motor thats disassembled, and a C6 transmission for $500. Think thats a good deal?

Re: 460 swap option
Just keep in mind that a 460 will handle more power then a 351 with out going after market block...I too was jumping back and forth between the two for my 98. And well I am going the 545 route now myself. Gotta love having a big block!!
just my 2 cents worth...

Cool, any other front suspension mods? I was told I would need to switch to a tubular K Member..........

Re: 460 swap option
Well
If your trying to save than the k-member is a good place to skimp. they arent cheap but could easily be changed later if you decide you want one.
I dont have a BB late model but I do have a 96 cobra. I swapped my k-member without pulling the engine by putting a 4X4 across the strut towers and suspending the engine from it. Super easy to change.
A coil over kit from UPR or similar would probably be worth its wieght in gold though to set ride height. Plus when you order you can specify heavier springs for the added wieght too.
The 351w is going to lack torque by a lot too. Its pretty cool when you rev your engine and the whole car twists.
I had a 71 stang with a built BB long time ago. It was very fun

Re: 460 swap option
Anybody know if the stock springs will work with maybe an aftermarket or adjustable strut?
