Cant spin the cam by hand ?
so i got it out by turning the cam handle with a wrench while i pulled on it and tried puttin in my old cam and i can spin that by hand you think the new cam is warped maybe ? or the journals on the old cam are worn just enough to get it to turn ? just wondering if its the new bearings i put in last nite or the cam ?

as your installing the cam, does it turn hard starting w/1st journal,or one of the other journals.Sometimes if the first or last bearing is not square it will turn really hard.

Re: Cant spin the cam by hand ?
I had a local machine shop hot tank my 460 block and install new cam bearings one time.
Got it home and started to slide the cam in.
2nd journal was snug, but by the 3rd journal there was no was it was going in.
Took it back to the shop and the knowledgable shop owner knew what the problem was. So he pops out the bearings and hones them and then the cam slides in as normal. He said that some 460s had core shift in the cam tunnel area.
Apparently, the newbie at the shop was the original installer.

Well everything seem to mic ok but just to be sure cause i'm new at measuring with one i took out the lunati cam i put in my buddys motor (i'm building two side by side) and it spins fine in my motor just like the comp cam did so thats two that are fine in my block. So just to triple check i put my new cam in my buddys block and it spins fine so i just took it out and put in in my block again and its locked up just like it was.

Have had that happen more than once from machine shops here, and when I pulled them out and pulled a new set in carefully the problem went away.
More times than not the brg's were battered and swelled from being knocked in. Then if your machinist honed them and put them back in, your oil clearance will be too great. Also you have lost some of the brg. crush.

Re: Cant spin the cam by hand ?
I wonder if both cam and block are off a little and both combined its not enough clearance kinda like swaping bearing halves to get the clearance you wan't ? i tried my cam in the other block and it spins fine and i tried two diffrent ones in my block and they spin fine.

Well i hope its not the bearing installer i'll fire myself thats why i tried two other cams to see if it was a bearing but they spun fine and to eliminate my cam being bent i tried it in the other block and it spun fine so now i'm stumped

Does it lock down as soon as you slide it in or after you put the cam gear on.

Maybe its the brand. LUNATI, mine is a Lunati too. Makes me question them.nuclearcobra wrote:Well everything seem to mic ok but just to be sure cause i'm new at measuring with one i took out the lunati cam i put in my buddys motor (i'm building two side by side) and it spins fine in my motor just like the comp cam did so thats two that are fine in my block. Had the same issue. My guy did the block and sent it back to me bare, I installed the cam and found the issue. Took it back to him with the cam and he made it right as can be. Said the same thing about the shift issue. A little hone goes a long way!
