prolly a dumb ? but im still learning...
this might be a dumb question but, are the terms *short block* and *long block* referring to the same thing as *small block* and *big block*???
Also, does the CID actually affect if its a small, short, long or big block?
the reason i ask is because i was watching a link posted by someone on a show called *horse power* on dfree383's cheap skate build thread and on the show they were building a 460 on a budget. well they called it a *460 big block* but then later referred to it as a *460 short block*...

Big block/small block is just the outer dimensions of the motor itself, none of the parts will not interchange from one to the other. Short block/long block is used to describe how much of the motor is assembled, the short block is usually just the block, crank, rods, pistons, rings, cam and timing chain, no timing cover, oil pan, harmonic balancer, heads, pushrods, intake and all other small parts. A long block has all of the above and is usually ready to bolt into your car, minus parts like your carb, alt, starter.
