Properly prepped and ported the P/C heads will be able to make over 500hp. What kind of pistons and what compression?

Re: 429 mild street build
I would think that any good flat top piston from a reputable manufacturer would work fine. Diamond, Probe, etc. are some of the popular stuff around here. Where are you? This might make a difference on availability/price. Can you find a 460 crank? It will make it easier to get a shelf piston for your needs, and give a little performance gain to boot.

Not much over the counter at performance shops but they can be ordered.I'm in NEW ZEALAND
460 crank yes I have a complete bottom end but the 429 is my car's origanal engine.
Well not quite but its a 429 Granada Perana.

Whats your thoughts on the rest of the parts?
I know the cam and intake are for High RPM use but it was cheap and will lighten up the car more.

Re: 429 mild street build
Put that original crank on a shelf and use the 460 crank. Pistons will be much easier. There are several guys here like Lem Evans that ship stuff all over the world and know what you need to get it going in the right direction. Never build an engine around some cheap parts that you have, it usually never ends up being what you want. That is a large cam for a daily driver, and if you are getting a care package from up here, it won't be that bad to get another item thrown in.

Re: 429 mild street build
Lem evens you have a contact for him?Its not realy a daily driver just weekends.
I bought the cam and intake for real cheap with the heads as a combo deal $2500 NZD about $1100 USD
So 460 pistons are not the same as 429?
I can use the 460 crank and know of some Eagle Hbeam rods are they any good?
I will only need pistons then if I buy the rods THey are $600 NZD BTW.

Easiest way to get ahold of Lem is to PM here on the board, or email him. His user name is Lem Evans and you can contact him either way from here. No the pistons are not the same, rods are the same. Yes Eagle rods are good rods.

Re: 429 mild street build
this could be a good build leaving it as a 429ci engine, and spend the money in other areas.

Re: 429 mild street build
Hi Perana,
I'm NZ based as well. Rotorua.
Where are you? These guys on here know their stuff so listen up on what they have to say
I also have a 429, mines a dove block and heads. I'm looking at doing what Schmitty says, buying a 460 crank first then working on the rest.
If you are going to spend some cash, there are a heap of guys that can help here and if you get hold of someone like Kiwi Shipping, the freight bill won't be a killer.
The prices they want for 429-460 stuff in NZ is over the top and there's no one down here that knows there stuff like these guys.
Cheers

He has the crank already, so no extra cash needed, and the pistons for the 460 are going to be cheaper.

429 KILLED THE BEARINGS
Hi folks, yeah so I decided to fit all the parts I have exept the cam.I used a Comp Cams High Energy cl34 227 cam and new lifters.
I put it alltogether and it ran like a champ sounded pretty good too,but when I jumped in to go up the road it started making a Knocking noise.
Not loud but just enough for me to hear when sitting in the car. Driving up the road I gave it the boot but not going over 6k on the factory rev counter
when i slowed down to stop at the lights it cut out. It started right up again an I drove further where the noise got real loud and the car cut out again
and would not start.
Now it wont even turn even with a breaker bar on the crank nut.
I removed the stater thinking that it might be locked up or something but it was fine.
Any one have a clue as to what it might be?
The motor was running fine before,it was totally stock but in good nick.
I've read that the 385's has a oiling issue but my car ran fine before.
All I changed was
cam and lifters
heads
intake
gaskets
timming gears
oil and filter
plugs
water pump
I cant see how that would make it lock.It was only a short drive anyway.
Any help please guys?

Hi I havent checked that yet I'm about to pull the motor but I just got home now.
I assume its oil related. the bolt for the cam is what was in the motor before.
