Ignition Switch Confusion
Here's something strange:
I went to crank my 429-460 for the first time today and found that when I turned the key to the "On" position the motor began to crank. Then I turned the key to the "Acc" position and the motor once again began to crank.
If I'm not mistaken, isn't the only position the motor is supposed to crank in is the "Start" position?
What in the world did I do wrong??
Thanks,
Keith

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
Correct, the "on" and "acc" just turn the power on. "start" has the power on and at the same time gives power to the starting system to crank the engine over. You may have something cross wired or in the wrong spot at the starter solenoid or at the ignition switch.TheFrog wrote:Here's something strange:

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
Thanks guys!
I also e-mailed the manufacturer of the wiring harness I'm using and he said something close to what you guys said. He said that I probably connected the "start wire" to the "accessory post" at the Ignition Switch. I hope to look into it tomorrow.
Thanks again guys. We'll see if it works tomorrow!

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
Ugh, I can't seem to figure this out!
Does anyone happen to know which post is which on the reverse side of a 62 Galaxie Ignition Switch? I need to figure out which post is Batt, Acc, Ign and Start. Why the heck didn't Ford label these??
Thanks,
Keith

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
I don't have a schematic. But you should be able to figure it out with a test light

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
I don't know of ANY Ford ignition switch which connects directly to the starter.
BOTH wires from a gear reduction starter are connected to the solenoid mounted usually on the fenderwell.

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
do you have power to the ignition with key on acc ? dont know what type of car you have or solenoid . now if the answer to my question is yes and you have a 4 post solenoid (2 large 2 small post) you could have the 2 small wires switched

Re: Ignition Switch Confusion
Thanks everyone for the resources and help! It's really appreciated.
Get this! I ended up purchasing a Universal Ignition Switch to bench test my wires since the Ignition Switch I had kept giving me no reading of power on the "Start" post when the Switch was in the "Start" position. I ended up getting power to all posts on the Universal Switch which solved this whole problem!!!! What are the odds of that?
Anyway, it ended up being a really easy and inexpensive fix to a complicated problem.
Thanks again!
