BBF Oil Pumps ?
I am a sponsored High Flow Dynamics racer, with great success using their oil pumps, but I saw a stock style pump break on a competitors boat this weekend at the races. What else is out there guys? Is there any custom braces available ?
Thanks
Jim
Thanks

You can make a brace to go from the front main cap to a pump cover bolt to help with vibrations but, it won't make it stronger.
The best fix would be to use a nodular iron, hefty oil pump from Jon Kaase. You say you are a sponsored racer so, now you need to make a decision ...

Re: BBF Oil Pumps ?
Nope, we actually lost a pump this weekend. It was not the pump in the JR Motorsport engine but the pump of someone he competes against...and that engine also had an HFD pump.342g wrote:He said it was a competitor's pump.
These Comp Jet Circle Racing boats are severe duty marine applications where they are on a closed circuit, coming out of hard corners pretty much at WOT, and often chasing the lead boat over the wakes and rollers.
Sometimes engine parts break; rods break, valves break, springs break, etc, regardless of engine brand or part. This particular racing application is indeed a pretty harsh one on the engines but there are Fords out there running seasons without Melling pump failures. But as in racing, sometimes....

Re: BBF Oil Pumps ?
Thank you Paul for the call. I think by adding a brace from the #2 main cap to the pump it could reduce the chance of this happening to me. I may also add another strap for the pick-up tube on #3. As Paul said we beat the shit out of these engines and boats putting on one hell of a show. If anyone has time and in the area of Parker AZ April 16th come on out to the BlueWater Casino.
Pumped up
Jim,
If you want to stay with a cast pump, you are on the right track with two braces. My 514 wet sump engine experienced a broken pump and I added a brace to #2. several years later, during a freshen-up, I found a cracked mounting flange (at the block) and added the second brace that goes to the pickup bolt.
Basically, it is braced in two directions, and has been fine ever since.
I believe that Paul's pumps are spot faced and "cleaned up" at the mounting bolt area, to allow a machined surface for the bolts to seat against. That is also important. I recall his pump refinements to look very nice.
Thanks,
Keith

Re: BBF Oil Pumps ?
Try a Kaase Pump. Its much heavier duty than the Melling.
