I hate Insurance Companies!!!!
I live in Ontario and the province passed a Street racing law that bans nitrous unless shown disconnected and the bottle not able to be opened when sitting in the drivers seat.
Now I normally use antique insurance for the truck but when checking around I found out not one insurance company will cover you if you have nitrous. My appraisal is due and now I need to decide if I should completely remove the system. I'm not racing every week-end, the nitrous project was one of oppertunity. I had a chance at two free 50lb aluminum CO2 bottles, I checked and found they could be converted. I had a custom cradle made, hydro tested the bottles and filled, bought remote openers and a NOS plate kit and ran it on the dyno for the final tune. 4 months later the law was introduced. Now my unique project has become an albatross.
Anyone else get shafted this way?

I'm not moaning about not being allowed to street race, it's not my thing. I'm not allowed to be insured period with this equipment, I can't even go to a show and shine. You can run a 7 second 1000+ hp car on the street but don't allow that Fast & Furious rocket fuel on the roads

Careful what you wish for; the intent sounds noble enough but implementation by politicians is another thing. The law involves an immediate one week impounding of the vehicle at your cost, minimum $2000 fine (up to $10,000), and your insurance suddenly dropped or so expensive you need to decide if it would be cheaper to walk. What gets you this;
- Nitrous hooked up
- Spinning your tires (falls under stunt driving)
- 50 km over the posted limit
- Carrying someone in your trunk
- Standing on the pegs of a motorcycle
- Lifting the front wheel of a motorcycle
This is just a few, now remember that when you get pulled over you are immediately guilty and walking until your time in court. The police are your first judge and jury. Now you may still think it's fine and that there is no reason to be 50 kms over the limit but how many times have you been through an area where the speed limit changes and your current speed can put you at or over the laws limit.
I'm not supporting reckless driving, I do want to know where you draw the line. Today is nitrous, next month, next year it's any engine modification, any modification of your vehicle (tint, wheels, brakes, suspension). The law gets the rough framework but the insurance companies drive home the final nail.
It's my rant and I'm not trying to sway anyone, my frustration is that I'm obeying the law but being penalized by the insurance companies.

I can't think of any reason to need N2O in a street car, other than street racing. I am not a fan of street racing!
Stunt riding should not be done on the street. (period)
31mph over the posted speed limit is dangerous.
Now explain to me why someone would be riding in the trunk?
We call spinning the tires "exhibition of speed". Its been against the law for a long time. I have proof.
Ok, standing on the pegs may be getting a little picky.

All insurance rates are based on risk. Do you not think that you are of extreme risk with nitrous plumbed into you engine. You are not being penalized, you are paying the rate for a high risk driver.

Re: I hate Insurance Companies!!!!
The nitrous was not a planned project, I was offered the bottles for free and thought it would be pretty unique. The final outcome of the project was a beautiful cradle with two nice looking bottles that get used once or twice a year on test and tune night. It was a good converation piece on show and shine nights. The rest of the truck is a blast to drive and a stroker is next when this motor gets worn out. Now my hand may be forced shelve or sell all the nitrous equipment. Anybody think they can fit the cradle in their car ?

By following the law I'm required to have my bottles physically disconnected. My lines are separated for easy inspection. Now how is my risk greater than the guy next to me with a blower or turbo or stroker? I would pay the higher rate for the risk but I'm not offered the option, simply denied.

Sigh, it seems it's the only solution. I'll have to post the cradle and bottles in the diesel fourms, it's not like weight is an issue for those guys

The draft for the law was based on some in California, apparently it was sport to put someone in the trunk and then race , the biggest complaint since the law cam into effect is its abuse in speed traps (officers and tow trucks waiting on off-ramps) and that your guilty until proven inoccent. You wait for your trial date but your car has already been impounded. I spent some good money getting driver training for my daughters so they had the best in defensive driving skills, I'm not supporting driving that hurt others. I just want to go to the car shows and the occasional test and tune night.

Holy crap!!!! What kind of left wing sissyfied web site did I stumble on?? No NOS is a good idea? Banning it even being in the car? Not to even mention the motorcycle stuff (a bit of wheel lift on a hard 1-2 shift is a beautiful thing)
But then to defend suck crap-tastic laws?? NO NO NO. Its a stepping stone type deal. First no NOS hooked up. Then no NOS. Then no aftermarket parts at all. Easy huh. Kind of like smoking laws. First no smoking in public places. Then no smoking in your own private establishment (not your house, yet). It happened. No I'm not a smoker. Just the next thing to ban might be something I do like.
I am trying to sway opinions here. Stop making a law for every little thing YOU think I shouldn't do.

Why do small trucks, (usually welding supply trucks), which carry oxygen, acetylene, CO2/argon highly compressed air bottles need to pay a higher insurance rate...?

Re: I hate Insurance Companies!!!!
Here's another one for you: You get out on the street and show out a little bit(like we ALL do from time to time) and have an accident. Your insurance will pay to fix your car or whatever. You go to the track where your are supposed to go and it will not cover anything. I don't worry about any of it. I run my new mustang at the track where it's not covered by insurance and I play around with my car on the street on rural roads where there isn't anybody and nobody is in danger but me, but at least I'm covered if I plow out a ditch.

You felt the urge to prove that one too, huh? I had my fair share of those back in my stupid days...
Why can't you remove the N2O setup for an inspection and reinstall it just for looks? Leave the line completely off. If you want to race it reinstall the line. Sure it's the gray area of the law, reading between the lines, etc... But you did say it could be there just couldn't be functional!

Let me start by saying, there is no one in this great country more conservative than I am. I fight to remove liberals from every aspect of my being.
Now,,,,,,,,,,,, the reason for the laws are to protect the innocent by-standers that will be involved in the crash when it happens. Now, If we were responsible for our own actions, we would not need liability. However, individuals think that someone else should be held responsible for when they do harm unto others. Therefore, it is necessary to have someone represent us when Joe Bob and Sally Mae file a law suit against us for $120,000,000.00 to make up for the $36,000.00 a year that they will lose for the next 20 years because they no longer feel the need to work.?.? Yeah, I know, it's crazy math; Thus the insurance. If you're stupid, they don't want to insure you. If you're racing on the street and putting innocent people in jeopardy, your IQ is probably in single digits and don't deserve to be written.
The OP is talking about Canada. Their law system is nothing like ours on the inside. Looks the same until you get into the meat and potatoes. Our current POTUS is trying to move us toward a system that is even more nanny controlled than the Canadians, so be ready if your not in action to help remove the liberals.
The laws are the laws. If they are no good, then we have to change them, not break them.
