Big slicks for the truck....discuss

I'm thinking somewhere around 33 x 16 or 34 x 17 MT's. 10.5's are out of the question. They would look like skinnies on the back of my truck. I have 15 x 15 wheels currently. I want to hook at every track I go to and never have to worry about traction, even at the expense of a slightly slower ET. I'm not sure if I have enough power to make the Pro-mod deals work. So, what are your thoughts?

Sometimes if you don't have enough power to slip the tires a little, they will shake. Just as bad as loosing a little traction with a smaller tire.

I've been running a M/T 16.5 x 33 and it works great on my car.

I really like the Hoosier 33.5's & the 34.5's.

In my opinion a 33-33.5" could work pretty good both with big engine power/no power adder, and also with a power adder depending on how each combo is setup. The 34-34.5" is just big enough that they can sometimes be too much without some kind of a power adder (or a steeper 1st gear) to help the launch from falling on it's face or rattling the tires.


A fine example is my buddy's ugly Willys with the big 34.5" Hoosier's. He broke his high RPM 500"/2.75 1st gear TH400/loose converter combo & picked up a 706"/1.80 glide/tight converter comb to try.

Straight motor his 500" combo could just barely pull the 34.5's,.......but just barely. It was indeed lazy even with the steep 2.75 1st gear & did need some decent amount of initial tire rotation to keep from falling on it's face. Adding nitrous improves the launch a bunch with the 34.5's, but some initial rotation was still needed as his 500" didn't have much torque.

The 706" combo's straight motor launch with the 34.5's looked about as lazy as the 500" combo, probably due to the 1.80 1st gear glide & the tight nitrous converter. But the 706" combo was a different story on the bottle. 1st bottle pass it almost dead hooked the 34.5's & road a wheelstand to half track where it broke high gear (travel limiters pulled out of the aluminum engine block stacking slip yoke clearance) & he had to lift. Ever since then the 706/nitrous & the big 34.5's have seen a few 'glide failures.

This week we went testing in Dallas Tuesday to see if a Rossler 2 speed TH400 would hold up to the big 34.5's better than a 'glide. First pass was straight motor & unbelievably super lazy, probably due to the 1.57 Rossler 1st gear. 2nd pass it lost either a roller lifter or the cam & only went a 4.90, so that's the end of testing the big 34.5's against a bunch of different combos for a while.



In the end I guess without a power adder if you don't mind possibly loosing a little ET/60ft, then get the bigger tire. A side benefit is they will last a few more passes than the smaller tire. Just be ready to work the suspension & initial tire rotation numbers if happens to fall on it's face or shakes with the biger tire.

I run the 18280 17 x 32 Hoosier D06 compound , dead hook anywhere I go. Gota have good weight transfer. You running C6?

I am running the m/t 33x 15x15 . I have had really good luck with them and really like them.
