rebuilding a C6
Has any "non professionals" rebuilt a C6 transmission? on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard was it? Thinking about giving it a go.
Thanks

Re: rebuilding a C6
Yeah I did mine. It was a challenge but not impossible.
Make sure you get a good factory manual. Summit sells copies. Read it over a few times to get familiar with the components.
I used the TCI heavy duty truck rebuild kit. Don't use the TCI shift kit tho.....long story. I think there are some other suppliers too.
I figured even if I had to do it a few times, it was still cheaper than paying someone to do it. The other thing is that we don't have any good trans shops around here.

Yeah, I bought that dvd after I did the trans I wish I had it before!!
It is quite a bit more involved than an engine build, but if you keep everything in order and super clean it goes pretty good.

Re: rebuilding a C6
#9 thrust washer converted to roller using a T-350 bearing. Note where machined to use that bearing there is a shoulder left on the outer edge of the race to keep bearing in place. The specific Ford bearing the race is flat and the bearing has a locating lip on the bearing itself. See 2nd pic of the bearing Frank mention later . It is from an 88-up C6/E4OD is what is listed as . Frank lists the Ford part number below.
Reverse hub NOTE: longer spline section on later model part. Must be used with roller
Front side of reverse hub machined for roller
Next 2 pics are rear plant machined both sides for roller
Front planet and hub machined for roller . Bearing is Sonnax GM-N-11 as used i believe from a T700 torque converter
Assembly now , reverse piston and retainer in case and #9 thrust roller with inner roller clutch race
#10 washer in place after torqueing inner roller clutch race in place
Reverse hub in place with reverse ring gear and #8 roller thrust The snap ring must be fitted to retain the output shaft
Rear planet set in place with #7 roller . Note retaining ring to hold planet and reverse hub in place
Teflon sealing rings used when using manual valvebody fitted while assembling forward drum. Stick them in the grooveswith assembly lube to hold them in during assembly
Front assembly together on the bench. You must set up each clutch pack first and i air check each one on the stator support before assembling it all together
Input shell on. This whole unit is then fitted into the case in one piece . The front band is presoaked in trans oil and fitted in next.
Teflon rings fitted to stator support before fitting pump into the case . Pump body is measured and new gears fitted , new bronze type converter bush pressed in. I always replace this bush and extension housing bush as they are often worn.
All together . Of course endfloat was set along the way .Band struts in and adjusted to spec
"E" servo lever fitted before assembly.. I have put a pic in to compare the "E" lever to the stock "A"
NOTE: I used a Sonnax Billet "R" servo . The large sealing section of the piston is too large and causes the piston to hang up in the bore . On Advice from Frank Merkl the groove is machined .007" deeper and all works sweet.
Valvebody fitted in and torqued into place and filter fitted
All together and ready to go

Yes i make up my own lines . It's not copper . It is steel bundy tube just with a copper coating to stop them rusting. The ends are double flared and the nuts are 1/2-20 thread .

gregaust , you have the wrong bearing in #9 , #7-#8 are thm350 bearing , # 9 is Ford pt# E6DZ-7G178-A it has an inner lip to center it on the oneway race

Thanks Frank. Just replied to PM. I use the T350 bearing since i can't always get the bearing you listed here . I have used that one before when i can get them, C6 and E4OD parts are not plentiful here . You will notice where the race is machined there is a locating shoulder around the outside keeps the bearing in place. I edited the text and added a pic to clarify the difference .

that will work as both bearings are the same thickness

No probs at all.. It is a -4 test nipple with a cap on it for checking the pressure as per Frank's transbrake Instructions.

What kind of filter is that? It looks like a very nice piece.

Re: rebuilding a C6
A thread back from the dead...
So for those of you that 'non-professionally' rebuilt your C6's, how are they holding up.. 7 years later lol
I may just tackle this...maybe
I figure other than the 5 clutches, my 69 Lincoln trans would be the same seals and such? Other than the tailshaft seal, that seems kinda unique.
Any advice on where to buy or a reputable brand name?

Re: rebuilding a C6
Not sure I qualify as Non-Professional, have done a few C6's Your best bet for parts is Jay @ Broader Performance . He'll have all you need at good prices and good service
The gasket kits cover from 67 up. Most basic rebuild parts are also same through the years . There are some minor variations . If in doubt take pics as you go and add them here and we can help
