interchange games with c6's old vs new. truck vs car
I'm trying to determine what will and won't interchange within the c6 fam.
I want a small block c6 to go behind a 351C. to go into a car,(galaxie)
I have been offered a c6 core for $40, it was out of a early/mid 80's pickup and is small block bellhousing, so it was likely behind a 302/351 . the issue that concerns me is that it HAD a transfer case bolted to the back end.
Can I take the bare case, install all the needed internals, tail shaft and output shaft (long for a full size).
and have everything fit?
I have a number of C6 trans' from 390 and 429 engines. with good internals. so internal parts are not a problem.
Is the C6 case out of a 80's 4wd the same as a early 70's c6?
will the tailshaft bolt pattern match?
I'm hard pressed to turn down the reasonable price for a c6 trans, and I wouldn't have to spend alot of $$ on a rebuild kit or internals. but I also don't want to burn alot of evenings disassembling two tranny's and not have things fit, trying to reassemble
thanks!

The 4x4 c-6 will work just take one of your other cases apart and swap everything from the two wheel drive in and onto the 4 wheel drive and you now have a smallblock two wheel drive trans. I wouldn't worry about the cases. smallblock bellhousing or bolt pattern are pretty much interchangeable from a 240,300 255 in a 1980 ford fairmont 289 302 5.0 351w and a 351c will interchange with one another.Bellhousing bolt patterns for FE will not fit anything but FE and 335 series interchange with the 385 series engines and nothing else. However their are some exceptions to this as Ford did build some oddball stuff!

Ok good I figured it would fit and the case would be the same as 2wd. it's was the back end, with the tailshaft mount I was concerned about.
if it all goes together for about $200 or so all total I'll have a new small block C6 trans for the galaxie.
with a nicely built cleveland in front..
thanks all !
