OAKLEY"S motor ?
Lem and Charlie
I just pondering the ability to build a large cubic inch motor with "A" heads for the fast 16 classes here in the Colorado area. Now given the altitude these guys are running anywhere from 6.30's to 7.20's to make the field. I'd like to know if it was possible to build something that couold run low 7.0 with out NO2 or very little. I really don't know how much these guy's are spaying but most of the engines are MADCAP 638ci. What's Oakley running?

Dry sump. Yes he sprays.....a guy with a A460 headed engine will have to spray to be competive in NHRA top dragster.

No way for me to know what someone else is making but Phillip ran 6.62 @ 203.7 at Indy this year and was not the fastest guy there .

Just curious ... how much IS spraying a LITTLE nitrous...? Do you consider spraying a 300 shot for half the run a little or a lot...?
Re: OAKLEY"S motor ?
Well today it was a Jegs SuperQuick 32 slugfest at Beech Bend, as part of the NHRA Div 3 SportsNationals Open. There were 53 cars trying to get into the show. Now realize that the Div 3 Jegs SuperQuick 32 cars are run on the 1/8th mile, and the NHRA Top Dragster cars are a 1/4 mile race. They are two different things.
Back to the Jegs SuperQuick race. It was kinda like Vicksburg and Gettysburg combined. The 32 cars that got in all ran between a 4.50 and a 4.561. So the guy that ran a 4.569 was the first alternate. Remember that 4.50 is the minimum e.t. allowed. Saturdays race tied with Indy a few years ago as the tightest field ever in the history of the SuperQuick 32 Series. The list of non-qualifiers included Lynn Ellison, Shorty Rader, Edmond Richardson along with 18 others. The car that was in the 52nd place (non-qualifier) was a 4.900, and 53rd place was a 5.040.
Specifically I'll speak about Krisse Lawyer's combo. Her 598 CID Ford engine makes 1100 dynoed horsepower with TFS A-460 heads and a TFS tunnel ram 2x4 set-up. That's n/a without any nitrous. Her car weighs 1998 lbs. It will run high 4.60's "on motor" and we have to spray for most Quick 32 shows. On her first qualifing shot today we sprayed a 200 Hp shot for 2.0 seconds, and she ran a 4.567. After the first session, the bump was a 4.60 or 4.61 I think, and James Monroe (who was in his number two car), was on the bubble. We knew that about 3 or 4 cars had run under the 4.50 minimum with high 4.40's, so they would come back and slow down and get in. Also, some of cars on the outside looking in would turn up the spray and get in. So for the second qualifing session we lenghtened the amount of time that Krisse was spraying from 2.0 seconds to 2.75 seconds, and she went quicker with a 4.521 @ 151.37. That put her in as #9 qualififer and in the top half of the field. Unfortunately, she went red by .005 and we were "first round runner-ups".
Additional info is that one of our locals, Scott Carman with his 598 TFS A-460 headed Ford was #7 qualifier with a 4.518 @ 151.44 on spray and his very stout engine was built by Phillip Oakley. And another one of our locals, Bobby Small has a 632 CID Pro-Filer headed Ford and he was in position #15 with a 4.527. That was "all motor" as Bobby has never sprayed, although he could if he wanted to. Last year at this very same race, Kristina and Bobby met in the finals with Bobby taking home his first Wally.
Hope this helps,
Charlie Evans

Re: OAKLEY"S motor ?
Charlie ... I think you got the car weight wrong with a typo and it reads 1,000 pounds to light; should be 2,198 pounds.

Re: OAKLEY"S motor ?
You guys are right. I totally messed up the car weight. It is 2 lbs. shy of 2000 lbs.,,so I meant to say 1998 lbs. Please excuse me, because it was late at night and I had just got back in home from Beech Bend.
Most of these dragsters are around 2000 lbs. with driver. Some being heavier and some being lighter, and a lot of it depends on driver weight also. The important thing to remember is that 100 lbs. is a much greater percentage of weight in a 2000 lb car, as compared to a 3000 lb car. Specifically 100 lbs. is 5% of a 2000 lb dragster, whereas it is 3.33% of a 3000 lb door car. Therefore the addition or removal of weight in a dragster has a much greater "cause & effect" than in a heavier door car. Phillip and I had this discussion a few years ago, and as a result I put a 1000 lb scale in the machine shop and we've started weighing all these engine combos. Nick has put a "sticky" on that thread now, so you read through it and gain some info.

Like I said....I don't have a number, but there are some blown alky dragsters running the class.

I think it's called "sponsorship" which requires running their product but, that was a while ago so maybe that isn't the case anymore.
Re: OAKLEY"S motor ?
O,never thought of "sponsorship" but i would'nt know anything about that unless i count myself as one.lolrmcomprandy wrote:cool40 wrote:why dont he have a "c" headed motor?Lem Evans wrote:He has a 605" and a 638"........TFS t.r. with two QFX carbs.

If Phillips about 2000# or so he's making in the 1350-1400hp range to run those numbers.
