427 SOHC engines
Always wanted to build one and put it in something sneaky. How good is the aftermarket for these famous engines as originals are out of sight expensive. Anyone have a guesstimate on what it would cost to build one as compared to a 385 series engine?
Probably not a practical engine but it is fun to talk about it anyway!

Dove engine parts seems to have a ton of stuff, bit hard to understand the site though. Hard to figure what all the bits and pieces would cost, sub 20k or more?

While the cool factor is very high, I can only imagine what kind of a 460 you could build for a third of the price.

Re: 427 SOHC engines
Well I'm going to build a large Ford motor for my next project, I'm finishing off a sleeper Fairmont atm and if I do not build a 351C (serious weakness of mine) I am looking to BBF, I know little of 460s and 427s aside from the replica model of a 427 SOHC that resides in my office.
Does sound like a true badass of a motor but from a financial standpoint not terribly practical for making big power. Seems an A460 based platform could make similar power for way less cost.
That being said I still want to learn more about the 427, it still is a favorite motor to me.
Like to hear more about it, please chip in with any kind of information or links you think would make a good read,
I can still afford that!
regards

Re: 427 SOHC engines
My dad was quoted 25k for a complete carb to oil pan, bellhousing to fan blade aftermarket sohc needing a freshening so 30k seems right in the ballpark.
10k will build a mighty nice 385 though. My 521 is nothing special but Ive got less than 10 in it. About $2000 more (solid roller springs and etc and a carb swap) and it would be pretty nasty by my standards. I know Carl is offering a hemi headed crate motor for about 15k and Kaase said at the tech seminar he wanted to build exact copies of his aluminum 588 B9 motor with the bling front dress for around 20k.
Cool cost.

If you were to build an aluminum hemi motor (like Jons 598) it would be in the 20k range.

I'm building one right now, and can promise it would cost well over 20 to duplicate....

I figured the 30k mentioned above would have been close. I was just saying that an aluminum Boss motor would be a rather large sum of cash as well. Not as large but large non the less.

How much is Kaase charging for the Boss 9 top ends? I wouldnt expect them to be cheap but hopefuly not rediculously expensive either (ala Arro cleveland heads).
