if you have a miss in the engine or fuel problem it will pull down under a load, like on the brake.having 2 converters show the same trouble at dif rpm tells you it's another problem.like coug said if the trans has a problem, like v/b leak it could be halfway stuck on the brake when you leave the line.your problems sound like shit that only i could have.lol looks like i'm not the only one.let us know what you find out.

an issue in the case or pump could be causing a converter charge issue................never seen a bad sprag do what your is, they usually just go flat from the git go.....way lower stall etc.

This is only he second time I have seen this problem..... Me and a buddy looked almost all season and changed and sent the converter back 4 times, same thing replaced Valve body, same thing....pulled trans replaced the case.same converter SOB worked like a charm.......pulled trans apart checked and double checked, nothing used the parts in different case worked great...... case looks great..... must have a heat crack that relieves PSI and loads the converter. cuz we had one do this exact same thing.....

I think Randy has nailed it here. I pulled the converter tonight and notice the fluid is red but stinks BAD!!! This fluid has three 1/8th mile passes and two converter hits, there's no reason for it to smell like this.

TOLD YOU SO.. Don't feel bad I currently have a c4 on the ground that work great for 25 years with just a sift kit. GOt a wild hair to freshen it and put in a Art Carr trans brake. Never had second gear. sent the valve body back twice. They sent me a new one the second time and I decide to get a different one (TCI). Had to change the case because the Art Carr you had to tap the modulator hole for a screw in soleniod. So first pass Broke the stator suport. Fixed that and had the converter checked and tried it again. 4 runs later and the car would act like your dragging the brake in 2nd and 3rd gear and the fluid was burnt real bad. We had that trans out 7 time and still never got it fixed right. My tranny guy will not return my calls to this day. Had a local Blind guy (no kidding ) build me a stock tranny and put in a transgo stage 3 shift kit and the car ran .6th's better so far. As of right now the TCI valve body is at Jay Broaders place getting check on his valve body dyno. The only problem here now is The tranny the blind guy build has a screw in modulator and the TCI tranny brake needs the press in modulator. But jay offer both but I need to find out if they will work.

Got the trans pulled apart last night and found absolutely nothing wrong except stinky fluid. Gonna swap cases today and see what happens.

Stock pump, yes. It's new but I'll have my guy check it out. We found nothing out of the ordinary which made the decision to change cases easier because the problem isn't obvious!!

I'd get a pump half with a pressed and bolted stator tube IMO.......

Got a phone call from Jay at Broader performance. Said the vavlebody is pretty messed up. I'll call him back MOnday and figure out what the best options are. TCI will never back there products up.

This is really pissing me off!!!!!!
Well crap.....I had the trans case swapped like Randy suggested and well...it didn't help. While I was waiting on the trans to get back i did the once over for atleat the tenth time. Come to find out i had the purple and green wires on the distributor pickup backwards. So I changed that, got the car running and now the problem is worse than it's ever been. Set the brake go up on the converter and she goes to about 5k and immediately the motor pulls down to 3500 or so and feels and sounds terrible. I changed the wires again to the wrong way which also involves taking about 20 degrees of timing out and the problem goes back to what the video shows, 5500 flash them immediately bogs down to 51-5200.
It absolutely acts like it has a broken sprag, but it's spragless. What in the world is going on here....I'm tired of beating my head against this wall. Trans specialties swears it can't be their converter, it's my promblem. I very possibly could have something wrong but before I swapped converters I had zero issues like this.
I guess I'm gonna take it to TNT tonight and see what happens....even though I know it ain't gonna run good.

I haven't tried another converter yet. That is the next step, and if a different converter fixes it then I believe a drive to Pennsylvania to deliver this pos through the front window of trans specialties is in order
I've broken a sprag before and it acts just like this!!!

Have you put a timing light on it and had someone watch it will you put it against the converter to make sure the timing is not retarding?

I had this very thought last night but no one around to help check it. If the timing were retarding like that, what would cause that??

I fought a very similar problem about five years ago on my Dad's little truck. It sounded nasty driving around and sitting at idle but, fell on it's face under a load. I swapped everything under the sun trying to find the problem.....fuel pump, MSD, coil, fuel line, plugs, converter, carb.
Was in the process of switching intakes to try that when, I noticed oil on both sides of the intake gasket....it wasn't sealing up around 1 hole. I had another set of gaskets so, just to see, I doubled up on them and put it back together and bam, problem solved.
Doesn't cost much to check to see.....fwiw.
Jeff
Just curious...have you checked this?

Re: Converter bad?? **(More money=more problems...LOL)**
Well I'm glad to say I finally figured this thing out. What do ya know it was the last thing I checked It wasn't the converter, tranny, ignition box, coil, wires, plug....you get the idea!!! After checking the timing under the load of the converter it was obvious that timing was retarding once the motor reached about 4k Rpms. And retarding a lot!!! Pulled the cover off and replaced the timing set and cam retainer, put it all back together and it wanted to still retard a about 6-8 degrees. Went ahead and took it to the track and ran a personal best of 6.18@113mph with a lousy 1.400 60'.
Pulled it back apart this week and actually checked the cam end play. Even with the new timing set I had .054 of end play. Made a handy dandy new spacer and got it down to .009. We shall see Saturday if she flies. Also made a gear change this week, going from 5.00's to 4.30's. Even being down on power I couldn't keep from spinning and shaking the tires the first 100' or so. This has been a long drawn out ordeal and I'm glad it's getting somewhere finally.
