Converter bad?? **(More money=more problems...LOL)**
So I've been fighting my junk all year and it just gets worse!! Bought a new trans specialties spragless converter and had the tranny gone through. Got everything together and running and when I take the chip outta the 3 step to check the converter it promptly goes to 5000 then immediately the motors pulls down to 4500 ish and it feels like someone tied an anchor to the flex plate.
Fast forward to today at the track and the car tries to leave but immediately pulls the motor down to 4000. Motor wont rev past 4000 until about 150 foot out and then it's on like doney kong. But the motor doesn't pull very good IMO. With the old tranny and converter that I was blowing thru car ran a best of 6.21 @ 112. Now the car wouldn't fall out of a tree if I pushed it Any ideas to what the hell is going on. Everybody here that I know and that has watched the car says converter.....but geeez this thing s brand friggin new. Was also suppose to stall 5600 but it won't even get close.
Here's a video of what's going on. This is the second converter, this one's an 8" deal vs. the original 9" they sent me. What is going on. It's not the motor, been through everything at least three times. I had no problems until this converter deal. Is the spragless deal pulling the motor back?

I've got fuel pressure. And to be honest I'm questioning just about everything now. Last two passes the car still wouldn't leave and as it goes thru the rpm range it definitely has a miss!!!!

back up and regroup.pull the valve covers and make sure it's all in order before you get to worked up.you cant know what the converter is doing if the motor aint at its best.you converter could have broke,it would'nt be the first time.when you get the motor sorted out if it still dont stall close to where it should yank that bitch and have it checked out.if it's a good brand they'll back it up if its broke but most just say "we could'nt see anything wrong" but after you put it back in it'll work.keep us posted!

Checking everything out is the plan for tomorrow. Fuel system, valve springs, etc etc.

Re: Converter bad?? **(More money=more problems...LOL)**
cant imagine an engine tune issue make it fall back after the initial stall like that.................sounds like the converter is off too me.
I guess I'm not used to having all the converter issues that seem to float around here, I rekon I picked the right builder......or I'm just lucky??????

I guess I have been lucky also, about 50 times on different builds and customers.
I will say that the only changes in our personal converters has been purely for testing purposes looking for that last little bit. we are going to loosen our current one up about 500 rpm this time around just so it doesn't drop 1700rpm on the shift. these turbo deals are a little different than the NA stuff.

Is the pump flowing what it should? What about the ignition stuff? Battery good? It sounds crazy but I've seen a marginal battery loose enough while on the brake to cause the ignition to act up. Once off the brake and the voltage comes back all seemed fine.

Pump is good, tried two different ignition boxes and same thing so i've eliminated that. Battery was tested good....could the alternator make something like this happen?

I would make sure the battery has enough "oomph" while it's on the brake under normal racing conditions. Pumps running, etc...

Trans specialties is sending me an 8" converter rather than the 9" they originally sold me. The 9" was almost already at full loose so this 8" deal should do the trick. I just wish they would have sent me the right one the first frigging time!!

Video added above. I havent taken this coverter to the track yet and I'm not too enthused to do so either cause it does the exact same thing wide open on the brake that the other one did.

I fought a very similar problem about five years ago on my Dad's little truck. It sounded nasty driving around and sitting at idle but, fell on it's face under a load. I swapped everything under the sun trying to find the problem.....fuel pump, MSD, coil, fuel line, plugs, converter, carb.Race Ready Fabrications wrote:

Was in the process of switching intakes to try that when, I noticed oil on both sides of the intake gasket....it wasn't sealing up around 1 hole. I had another set of gaskets so, just to see, I doubled up on them and put it back together and bam, problem solved.
Doesn't cost much to check to see.....fwiw.

It goes to 5500 then immediately pulls back down to 5200ish, and won't hold steady. In the car it honestly feels terrible, like the converter is pulling the guts outta the motor.

This is the second converter, this is the 8" where they originally sent me a 9". The 9" would go 5000 and pull down just like this one does. The 8" goes 5500 but then pulls the guts outta the motor to 5200ish. The problem with the transbrake ended up being a combination of a homemade valve body and the case being drilled wrong. I bought a new valve body and case so I'm sure that's not an issue.

2 converters cant have the same problem ( most likely ) Has to be some thing in what you changed in the tranny. It sounds as if you never ran it before these changes.(even with the old converter?)

I agree about the two converters in a row being goofy. Two weeks ago with the first new converter I made three passes. It wouldn't fall out of a tree. Car would try to launch but immediately fall on it's face. Tach would literally stop at 4k Rpms and hold dead set for about 100' then it was like something released and the car would move on thru the powerband but something was still holding the motor back. Like a miss but not so noticeable. In talking with my tranny guy he doesn't seem to think it's in the tranny. But I expected him to say that I guess.
