But, with the wrong starter it would have been trying to run backwards

And if everything else is correct (cam, dizzy gear, etc...) can, and will, run backwards. Counter rotating engines are the norm in twin engine boats. Sometimes it's done in the gearbox, but usually the engines are counter rotating...

Re: Carb Problems
Yep I have a boat that has a 351 reverse rotation engine. Only thing different for the most part is the dizzy and starter. It will run in the normal rotation but really really really bad.

Re: Carb Problems
Ok this thread has gotten confusing. The engine doesn't turn backwards. The starter is mounted on the opposite side of the bellhousing so it must turn the opposite direction compared to the regular starter but the 3.8l, 5.0l 460 or whatever turns the same way as it did in the car you just took it out of.

Re: Carb Problems
While the OPs engine may not rotate backwards there are in fact counter rotating engines used in boats. Since this is a single engine deal it's probably standard rotation.
The starters are moved up top to keep them out of the bilges.

What I read is the starter goes in the rear of the bell housing and that would make a regular start turn the engine backwards
