F350 transmission question
I'm looking at a 96 F350 Crew cab 4X4 with an Power Stroke and an auto trans. It's in nice shape, runs good but has a trans issue, works fine then seems to miss shift then locks up the convertor in all gears. Any thoughts on what could be wrong? He only wants $2100 for it but I know transmissions aren't cheap.

Fabio should know. I had a bad MLPS on my 94 F150 that caused all kinds of weird issues.

sounds like the instrument cluster acting up, VSS signal goes to the IC then the PCM, The IC will wack out and makle the truck think its going faster than it is.........thus blazing through the gears and locking the TC.

Re: F350 transmission question
Jon, what does it take to fix? Does it need a new IC or can it be repaired? Can a guy get a used one, and if so does it have to come from a diesel truck?

Re: F350 transmission question
we just replaced them at the shop, I'd think a used one would work, it would need to be for a diesel.

Thanks Jon, I'll check on one tomorrow. Any thing else I should look for on this thing? It seems like it could be a good deal but I don't want to buy a money pit.

Re: F350 transmission question
I mean thats prolly whats wrong but not 100% lol, if you can get a scanner on it and run a data stream on the VSS PID you should see if its acting up or not..........metal on the VSS, wiring, etc can also be the issue........
look at the turbo wheel real good, if it dirty and or the vanes are ragged looking beware..also excessive crankcase blowby combined with a dirty wheel is an indicator of a dusted engine..............I mean if the rest of the truck is in good shape and its priced right then go for it..........driveline stuff can be fixed.
