Re: carb screens
An interesting idea for a drag car that's not running an air filter considering how dirty/rocky/trashy some track's pits & return roads are.

Thats what I was thinking Dave, beats getting a rock from the burn out box thrown down your carb....

Nice looking products. That domed one looks a lot like the kitchen strainer that (as I recall) David Cole told us about a few months ago.

I agree but some of us have lower scoop so I was looking at the lower flat type....migh get one and have the KY boys test it on the dyno see if it looses hp?

Re: carb screens
I have one of the flat ones, But I have to cut my air pan bigger, to fit over it, the guys that sell these are racers from Ohio, nice folks.

Re: carb screens
Here is what Keith was talking about. I did this prob 8 yrs ago on my first dragster. Worked great. About $6 stainless kitchen strainer. Cut the handle off, couple of bolts and some silicone to hold it on. There have them in several sizes, so a 4150 or 4500 is covered. It is stiff enough to not get sucked in, but is still flexible enough that you can flatten it out for scoop clearance. I also like that the mesh is finer, it can keep smaller rocks out.
Re: carb screens
I have made several like David posted above, very cheap and very effective. I'm sure the premade ones are nice, but if you have any fab skilz at all you will save some coin............

the screen does look finer so that is probably what I will do also.....

Re: carb screens
Be kinda neat if someone did a cfm airflow test to see how much restriction that fine mesh screen produces.

Re: carb screens
The wire mesh when shaped in a dome creates a tornato type vortex and increases the the air flow a million times,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,OH never mind I think I saw that on TV.

Ive run with a screen, no screen, and with my 6" k&n with a std and a filter top.....................no et or mph difference whatsoever..................the sealed airpan is worth about .5 mph though.
The screen will keep out the rocks but we still have some dust to deal with..........no way I;ll run without the filter set up.

Re: carb screens
I tried one these a few weeks ago. http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/1002/10002/-1?parentProductId=743329
With the foam element I couldn't even do a burnout in the box. The engine would cough, sputter and die.
I made a few 1/4 mile passes with just the base and screen and my trucks ET was off.
After a short cool down I made another pass with just the open carb. I picked up a tenth.
In all I made 5 passes with the open carb and my ET was exactly the same for all 5. A tenth quicker than with the base and screen.
The top of my carb is 3" from the hood with no scoop. I can't see the large mesh screen causing a flow restriction. My guess is the base caused some bad turbulence.

Back in the day those were sooooo cool looking however they didn't work very well. A friend of mine encountered a backfire and the foam caught on fire

might as well throw a red rag over the carb, I am like Damon those are useless been there done that, kind of like the foam in the velocity stacks.......
