Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well i have posted this build on the other board but will post it up on this one for those that don't crossover.
My father purchased this car 31 years ago out of a junk yard that is in swamp land. Needless to say the left quarter was all messed up, it didn't have a rear end under it at the time, and there were no rims/tires on the front so the brakes had locked up from sitting in the ground. This car is fairly rare as there were only 4,327 66 GTA convertible Fairlanes produced, but the car was far beyond gone when he pulled it out of the junk yard to bring it back stock. He managed to get the car together and drive it 5 years with 4 different motors. The car hasn't been on the road since 1989. The car was given to me around 2000 and life has happened since then, so it has been sitting in the garage waiting for time and money.
I joined the Marines in 2007 and since then have finally got my crap together and recently in January the wife ok'd spending money to get this thing together. A major part of the of the build will get its source of income this fall when i get my re-enlistment bonus from changing over to Marine contracting.
The car is a 2x3 tubular chassis, mustang II front which will be switching to coil over very soon, rear is 9 in. w/ 4-link setup and watts linkage, 4.10 rear end gear, tires are currently 33x21.5x15 mickey thompsons on prostar rims, motor will be a 521 w kasse boss 9 heads blown (already have Hampton 8-71 on order w boss 429 intake), tranny is a Dynamic Racing mighty mite M2 fully rollerized with 2.82 gear set and a custom 10" converter.
The car will be a show car for the first year and then a driver with a few weekend trips to the strip.

mock up block
well picked up 40 over D9 block that have been cleaned and checked with rods and crank. "These blocks have been mag checked, cooked, blasted, line honed, bored, honed and decked. The cranks have been mag checked and ground. The rods have been mag checked, blasted, refurbished and sized."
I couldn't come up with the mains and crank i needed for less than 300 for the block i had which was free, but blown.I was able to pick this whole set up for just over 500. I'll just sell it off when im done using it. I wanted to use the plastic replica block for mock up, but they only make long blocks and since im using boss 429 heads and intake it won't work.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well earlier this week i ordered the front matching 15" pro star wheels and mickey thompson sportsman tires. Dad took them and had the wheels and tires mounted balanced with bags today. The car hasn't had a matching set of wheels and tires on the front and back in over 20 years.
Backs are 21.5x15x15 and fronts are on a 15x6 rim.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Got the car sitting down on the wheels and tires and it looks pretty damn good.
also did some fab work to the mustangII front crossmember to get the blower motor to sit down are far as possible. It will still be mid-windshield.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well we made a plexi glass front plate for mock up purposes. This will not only allow us to see where the bolt holes are in the block for mounting options, but it is much easier to cut and work with. Once we are all do mounting up the AC, Alt, and power steering we will transer it over to my aluminum plate. I also ordered billet brackets for my accessories and there are coming from March performance. The chrome rack and pinion from unisteer is also on the way.
Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well this last week i took my pre-deployment leave and took a road trip. The wife and I drove from NC to WI is my truck and made a pit stop in KY to see Charlie Evans and Phillip Oakleys operation. First off i want to say the hospitality was amazing and they gave us the grand tour. Charlie took us around town and then down to his shop and was able to break down things not only for me to understand, but my wife. After showing all the equipment at his shop and what they could do there we were off to philips house to see the area he uses to assemble the engines. My wife got the opportunity to jump in the drivers seat of his dragster and she was loving every minute of it. After discussing some of the expectations and parts that would be used they took us out to eat at cheddars, which was great food. Afterwards we headed to Charlies house where he was able to show some parts to me and their reason for running them vs the others. He also gave me a distributor crab car with adapter to take to WI to make sure we could run one. Below are a few pictures from the trip. I was informed today that Philip received my check to order the parts for the short block so today is the start of the engine build process. They both gave me their cell phone #'s and told me mon-sun to call if i had any questions. If you can't tell i was highly impressed as it's very rare to find this type of customer service now days.
Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Made some progress since i left.
-We have got the altenator brackets almost figured out and lined up were we need it.
-Ordered a new polished steering column that is 28" long as the one i had is 32" long so that will be up for sale shortly.
-we moved the motor up about 1" for clearance with the power steering and the remote oil filter setup
-a fellow member with a boss 9 pinto (cfb289) aka craig has allowed us to use his header forming die to make the tube form to the header flange. It is a tight fit for a 2-1/4" tube, but it will work by opening the flange hole just 1/16" top and bottom.
-ordered a kit of random 2-1/4" bends from schoenfeld
-ordered a 4" hand made collectors from headers by Ed
-Mr. Oakley has said he was able to cc the head, order the crank, and i believe the pistons.
-I ordred a double pass titan left hand radiator today that is 19"x28" and (2) titan 14" electric fans that are rated at 2200cfm each at 6amp each for draw from lefthandchassis.com
-Ordered one sparco Chrono grey and black seat for mock up purposes. Part#00959CRGRNR

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Some of the pieces of the puzzle showing up.
from lefthander Titan left radiator
titan 14" 2200cfm each electric fans
Found a Mallory dist that clears the blower drive

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well originally the car was set up for a C6 and an FE motor so we have taken that brace out. We didn't like how it mounted and would have caused the frame to get scraped up anytime you took out the old brace.
Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well we got the contol amrs mounted up for mock up purposes only and compared to the original stuff a huge diff. They are fatman polished stainless control arms.
And the issues we are in the process of working trying to get the v-belts running:

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
We got the header flanges back from having the tube opening opened 1/16 all the way around to fit the 2-1/4 header tubes. Also got the mill up and on the stand and got it ready to make some of the aluminum spacers we will need for the accessory brackets. It's getting close to that time to cut the hole in the hood and let her breathe before shipping off the parts Oakley Motorsports. If all goes well should have a motor coming together in the next few months. Hoping to come back in May to a dyno day!
Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
We were able to rough cut the hood last night to allow the our little friend say hello to the world.
headers
Well let the fun begins 2-1/4" tubes going to 4" collector. For clearance they will be going up around the frame and then at the bottom runing along side the frame rail.
seats
after receiving one of the two seats i orginally ordered (sparco chrono roads) and they were not even close to the material that it shows on sparcos website, i returned them. I already had the sliding tracks and mounting hardware so i bit the bullet and ordered the sparco torinos. Went with the black and grey cloth.
Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well almost got one header done and managed to get the tubes total length with 1/2" of each other. Dad did some great work getting these things to go up and around each other to get the lengths this close. We have a guy that will be tig welding them up so we can get some nice pretty seams and then they will be off to get coated. See below threads as i have put the header progress photos below.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well got the headers back from being tig welded up. I have to say my Dad did good work and Jessie does some great welding. we also had the inside of the tube meeting the header flange brazed to smooth them out, One more big piece down. We will be spraying them down with high heat paint for now, but after the dyno run in May, i will send them out for coating.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Well the day has come that we are ready to take all the big parts down to Ky. My Dad is getting a much needed break and a nice little road trip to visit Phillip and the rest of the Ky boys. The last i heard the block (A460), crank (forged), and the pistons are already there. My Dad will be taking some photos while he is down there and i will update with where it is in a couple of days. Phillip said the build should start in the first week of April.

Re: Blown boss 9 66' Fairlane
Dad took a little trip down to Ky to drop off some of the motor parts last weekend. He was able to see some of the parts that have been ordered for the build. i don't have the exact specs on everything, but the build is starting the first week of April.

exterior color
Dad was able to find the the paint code for the exterior and mix some of it up. The color is Lamborghini Monterey Blue and as you can see if flips pretty good. The reason for getting the test panels painted up now is we are having the block painted Subaru WRX blue and need to make sure they go.

Nothing cooler than a blown shotgun engine. What cubic inch are you building?

Thanks, it will be a 521. We're shooting for 1,000hp on 93 pump as it will be a 95% street driven car.
