Too Much Fuel Pressure,,,? Empty Too Much Fuel Pressure,,,?

Post  Maxx Levell Mon 16 Jul - 16:38

Took the car out this weekend to get some passes on it with new changes. Went from about 10:1 CR to 13:1, new valve springs, and had AFR heads ported and polished some. 347 with Quick Fuels E85 750 on it. 60's, which were 1.48-1.50 with the old setup, were running 1.6x, and about mid track, it would nose over like it was running out of fuel. MPH was WAY down from where it was last year. Assumed it was lean, so jetted up...improved some, but was still nosing over, and not sixty footing. Checked plugs, and had a couple that were showing very lean...and damaged electrodes. Loaded car back up and called it a night. Checked fuel pressure, because it was mentioned that I may have a gauge issue. Thought I may not have enough pressure. Swapped out gauge for an AutoMeter one I had in the shop...and it read almost 12 lbs of pressure instead of the 7 the other gauge was showing! I would have thought this would have made it incredibly rich...but the plugs, and the cars response, are indicating lean. After asking around some...some have said that with the pressure showing that high...it is probably draining the bowls during the run...does this sound right? Kind of counter-intuitive...but I don't really have any experience to discount the theory myself. Any thoughts on this? I'm definitely going to lower the pressure...just wondering if that line of thinking is sound? If that's correct...am I to assume that it's pig rich on the starting line...then running the bowls dry as the run progresses?

Thanks for any help...

12lbs of fuel pressure would not cause a rich condition unless the needle and seat could not hold it quick is normally not the case. Fuel lines may be too small, pump too small or pump going out. Sounds lean the entire run by what you are describing.

What's the rest of the fuel system consist of? First time using E85? Maybe the pump isn't moving enough volume? Pressure isn't everything. The flow needs to be there too.
