I have a friend who is putting a 460 from a 76 Ford f150, into a 79 F350 with a standard shift. He needs a standard shift flywheel for it. Hes telling me one from a 390 should work is this possible?



Will the 400M flywheel work on the 460?

You are right in the middle years when they changed from internally balanced to externally so be careful to get the right parts. They tend to shake really bad if you get it all backwards.

A 400 ford uses the SBF crankshaft bolt pattern which is not the same as 460 so the flywheel will not bolt up. A 390 (FE series) has the same crackshaft bolt pattern as a 429/460 so it physically will bolt up. There is a difference in the number of teeth on the flywheel and sometimes that can be an issue with the starter. Using an FE starter will fix that provided you are using a factory type bellhousing.

Another trap is the some 460's are internal balance and some are external. The 390 flywheel is internal. You need to make sure your 460 is internal balanced. From the factory 460's from 1979 model year and up were external balance, and the earlier ones were internal. An external balance engine will have a weight welded onto the flywheel and have "hatchet" shaped weight behind the balancer.

a 400 has an entirely different bolt pattern ... it won't fit.

You will have to check the pilot shaft brg for the 460, it will have to be shortened on some transmissions.

There is not a 460 o ballance flywheel. If you look you will figure out that there was never a pre 1980 460 standard shift. Only was in teh 78/79 and they were only C6. You get a 460 flywheel and have it zero balanced its cheaper. Not to mention if you use a 460 flywheel youll need a 460 belhousing. doing the swap too......

the 351m and 400 wheels have a sbf bolt pattern,they will not work, a 390 wheel is net ballance,and will work on pre 78 460's without mod's

use the 351m or 400,429 or 460 starter with a 351m or 400 bell

429 are all "0" balanced and came in cars prior to 1980. They are a direct swap to a 460. The FRPP piece is a good choice or one from a 390 can be made to work or can pay to have an 460 external balance converted...

429s went away in 73,they were net ballance,460 became ext ballance in sept 78, 390s are net,but other fes are not even tho the flywheels will bolt right on a 429 or 460, and with as many changes things have gone thru after 40 years you have to be sure its not a 390 wheels reballanced for a 428,

and factory 429 wheels are a diff tooth count,and dia then the 390, thats why the 390 wheel with the 400 bell works

Guys thanks for all your input. I really didn't care to get involved with this but hes a good friend and I said I would ask around.

hes also as tight as the bark on the tree so we will see how this plays out.

The counter weight on a FRPP flywheel which I have for dyno usage is a BOLT-ON and can easily be removed.
