Nickle Plating on Headers? Empty Nickle Plating on Headers?

Post  Tore August 15th 2012, 2:37 pm

I just found out some of the dirt ballers in my area have their headers nickle plated. Any of you guys had this done and how does it hold up????

Thanks Tore

Back in the early 70's I bought a set of new nickel plated headers from Nationwise Auto parts for my 65 Mustang. They looked like stainless but wasn't. I had them for about 5 yrs. They stayed nice shape but turned a little yellow from the heat thru the years. I would buy them again in a heart beat.

The shop manager at our local chrome plating shop said that with "triple chrome plating" (copper, nickel and chrome), that the nickel was the most important layer. I just don't remember his reason or rational behind that statement.

The swap headers I bought from L&L were nickel plated. They lasted much better than regular steel that's for sure.

I think the nickel coating was before ceramic coating was around. I know it has been a very long time since I bought those L&L's. But they are still in the same truck for 14 years.

The thing that would lead me more to the Ceramic over the nickel, would be that the Ceramic also gets the inside of the headers. If the headers rust in the inside you can pack some ring lands pretty good w/rust.(cam overlap). I don't think the nickel plating get's the inside.

X2, L&L headers have some really nice truck headers. And as far as ceramic vs nickle, I'd like to know if the nickel plating does get on the inside like ceramic as Rick mentioned Question

ceramic coating also helps keep the heat down in the engine compartment. It doesn't eliminate the heat as some people and companies try to advertise but it definitely helps lower it.

Isn't nickel plating a liquid dip process? If so, wouldn"t that coat the inside? Suspect

It might Kim,I'm just not sure. I do know that nickel is a part of the Chroming process, but they don't get chromed on the inside. confused

When you

When you have headers Nickle or Chrome plated the chemically clean them then diped, so yes it gets inside...
