Ring gap info
Would anybody here be able to to tell me what the ring end gap should be for some rings?
They are some Sealed Power ZE296K.

I wanted to double check to be sure I have them right, but cant find the paper that came with the rings.

I would say it depends on your performance level... I do all of my performance stuff at .024-.028 for the top ring, and .028-.032 for the second ring...

Re: Ring gap info
It depends what bore you have. My reply was for a 4.360 (Stock) bore.

Re: Ring gap info
Not stepping on toes here, but this is my routine...
I just follow a basic rule of thumb taught to me years ago when I was still a teenager...
For standard N/A apps. I use .004 per inch of bore for the top ring and .005 for every inch of bore for the 2nd ring...
For N/A HP street stuff, I use .005 per inch of bore for the top ring and .006 for every inch of bore for the 2nd ring...
For N/A engines like my 521, I use .0065 per inch of bore for the top ring and .0075 for every inch of bore for the 2nd ring... However, there's a guy here that will add another 10% to this particular figure if it's a higher rpm deal... He says it helps improve ring seal and allows the gases to escape before blowing by the top ring causing ring flutter in the higher rpm ranges... (Above 6000-6500) I haven't noticed evidence of this in my engine as of yet and I shift it at 7200 and it's been to 7700 a few times...
If I was doing a N2O/Supercharged engine, I would open each up another .0005 per inch of bore...
And regardless of app, I always make sure the oil rings are about .015...
Hope this helps,
Doug...

Re: Ring gap info
I like Dougs advice in his last post. But seeing this is basically a freshened up stocker with a small cam, I think I will go with what BBf-Falcon posted. But farther on down the road Ill use Dougs rule of thumb.

Tim, I think we all agree that the main thing to remember is it's always better to have plenty of clearance than not enough. Good Luck Buddy
