408/418W build... what would you build?
My brother is looking to plan out a new build for his Mustang. looking to build between 393-418 inches. Pump gas. Would like a forged crank, h-beams, etc... I've been out of the SBF stuff for awhile. I'm not sure what is out there for heads today. What heads would you guys use and why? AFR? Canfield? TFS High Ports?

Either 408 or 418 if you stick with small bore. I have a set of bare tfs-r heads if interested.

Not that my opinion counts much, but being you say pump gas I would opt for the bigger cubes. What about the CHI heads ? I would think that would make some good power. Are you going to spray it, go N/A or put a hair dryer on it?

Quit it. I'm trying to mind my manners.
Re: 408/418W build... what would you build?
If it gets any kind of power added at all it'll be a plate system. Never thought about the CHI stuff. I was kind of wanting to keep it fairly simple for him. Mostly off the shelf stuff to get it built and running in a fairly short time.
Larry, what kind of compression did you have? Any work done to the AFRs or were they out the box? We'll probably run a Super Victor on it. It'll be a 1-2000 mile/year street car and spend some nights at the track every month. Needs to be pump gas though for when he cruises it though.
And Randy I've tried. He wants a SBF.
Justin, what's been done to those TFS heads you have?

2" headers with a super victor and a 950 QFT on alky
gas is only for washing parts isn't it?

My heads are cnc ported from tea. We also welded up and had machined around the stud holes where we had troubles before on the older castings. They are ready for valves and springs. We kept them as extras but now are going to victor sr's for more flow.
Our current sbf with 9.5:1 cr makes over 650 with the same porting program with the motor setup for turbos. You can buy the same ported heads everyday from tea for $1000 each bare.

Stock block, hence the pump gas requirement... As fast at it will allow. Not looking for anything exotic. Was thinking about a set of AFR 205s, flat tops, 408 cubes. He wants to be able to drive it the 10 or so miles to the local cruise nights. Other than that we'll trailer it to the track.

Pistons with a small dish and valve reliefs should be around 10.5:1 with 58cc 205 AFRs. A custom hyd or solid roller cam Vic. Jr intake 950 or 1050 cfm carb running 408 or 418 on 93 0r E85. That should get him 6:70 to 6.50 or faster in the 1/8th running 3.73 or 4.11 gears with 28" tall tires in a 3000lbs to 3200lbs car. I suggest running a c-4 or good easy shifting 5spd with a good clutch. This is a verry streetable set up! good luck !
Flat tops will be around 12.1:1 or better with 58cc heads.

i still would put a glide in it. wouldnt cost much and you would never have to worry about it.

I run a c-4 with a lot of passes on it and street miles to with no isssuses ! it runs consistant 6.90s and 7.00s 1.45 60s on drag radials. Thats not to mention 3rd gear burn outs and beating on it around the back roads with the accasional 35 mile trip one way to work.

If you run the Z304's ask about the rocker arms ? I was thinking they take a different style rocker arm !( Offset)

Regular one work fine, I ran a set for 5 years and have another set one the shelf in been playing with. With 2.02 intake and a street valve job they are blowing well over 320 and the mid lift flow is bad ass.
The exhaust was getting 230 with a 1.6
