580 build P-51 build ideas
I'm the luckiest guy today. I purchaced a A460 block P-51 deal yesterday and I am just stocked. Now that I have a real motor I'm looking for a good street build pump gas engine combos or just some advice before I buy a bunch of unneeded parts. This is what I have. A460 block 4.5 bore but needs probably another .030 to clean it up. Steel 4.5 crank manufacturer unknown. Mains need turning. Rods and pistons I will replace. P-51 heads with one combust chamber damaged by broke valve but will clean up. Kaasse oilpump. This is probably my last engine build so I want to do it right the first time. I'm looking for max hp on pump gas and reliability if that's possible. Any ideas suggestions welcome please.

Go dig around in the build section and read up on Blake's 580" P-51 headed combo. Made over 1,000HP on race gas. That could give you some ideas on what you could do with lower compression...

I am going to make the guess that these are not new parts.
After inspection ... what good parts remain will pretty much make most of your build decisions for you.
Re: 580 build P-51 build ideas
Nope. Everything used . One of the heads dropped a valve but looking at it this morning I was able to fish it out by hand. Seat will need replacing and a little creative welding to fill the voids. Block look real good. Crank rod journals need turned. Can't identify the many on it. I would like to know if it's forged or billet. This engine was one of two owned by Geano who is a member here. If no one knows Mr. Gean he has passed on . He blessed me with the 572 and another friend with the 530 ci.

I have a P-51 head 580 in a ProStreet Mustang that runs 9.15's in average air and is street driven. It is an E85 package with a baby roller cam. Not set to kill like Blakes. The car runs at the track with a full exhaust and has been reliable. What would you like to know?

I just would like to get the biggest bang for my buck. I wanna make the best out of these parts because after this build I think I will be done with building projects and want to just play with them. I do have a question though. What is the advantage of Q85 over pump gas? Q85 is not really avail to us in South Alabama that I know of. Havent looked either. I can get 98 octane fuel locally for about a buck more than regular pump gas.

Re: 580 build P-51 build ideas
There isnt Q85 fuel that I'm aware of. I am running E85 and in the midwest its available. E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It is equivalent to 105 octane so you can increase the compression ratio to as high as 14 to 1.
You mention pump gas and all I can think of is low compression and stinky unburnt exhaust. Is this a race car or is it going to be street driven?
If its a race car people use pump gas for cost but why not use methanol at $1.40/gallon by the drum especially if E85 is not available.
If its a street driven build and gas is the only option then you will be limited.

E85 my bad. I knew the Q didn't look right. This is a street car. It may see the track however we are plagued with 1/8 mile tracks. I like the 1/4 mile .

Okay with 93 octane it will limit the capabilities but being street traction limited this is what I would do.
Keep compression to 10.5 to 11.0 and have a known builder on this site grind a flat tappet solid cam. Victor or track heat manifold with a 1250 Dominator.
This engine can make good power and be reliable for street use.

Are you near Mobile? If so, does Mobile Dragway sell race fuel? I know the fuel guy at Gulfport Dragway can get E85.

Re: 580 build P-51 build ideas
I'm not sure if they sell fuel . Mobile is not much of a drag strip these days. 60 foot short of a 1/8 mile do to limited stopping distance. Atmore seems to be the place to race but again 1/8 mile track. I don't mind the short tracks but if your gonna run a street car then be prepared to swap gears . Not for me. I did research E85 today on my phone and it looks like a few stations are selling it. I am going to check that out. for now I am gonna research E85 builds as well and check my limitations. Thanks

i was considering a e-85 build a while back. go to the app store on your phone and download a gas locator app. it takes all the work out of figuring out who has it.
