top end setup and cam ideas for my 557 build.
I need help with my top end set up on my 557 build thats going into a 1973 mustang coupe (see avatar)
Rear gears are 3.55's running through a C4 and 3000 stall converter.
Car is 50/50 street strip car.
I was thinking an 1150 dominator Carborator form holley
Victor single plane intake (4500)
Ported kaase scj heads
compression ratio about 13:1 is alright because im running a snow boost controller which worked very well on my old iron headed 12:1 compression cleveland. (may it rest in peace)
I was thinking a cam with about 265-270 duration @ .050 somewhere around .700-.750 lift.
Anybody think this combo will hit around 700-750 hp? thats my intended goal with this build i know i have the displacement

I am not the best guesser .I would say someone will tell you here .But i have a 557
Trick flow a head motor with just over 800 " cam Thats proly closer to 950 hp
man i think you will make more power than you think .I sure hope the c-4 is done
right with the wieght of the car.Good Luck on your build.

You should be able to achieve that goal with those components, but I would wait on the intake until the TFS intake comes out late spring.

Thanks for the imput guys. Im pretty sure the C4 can handle it but it doesnt mean im not going to get another one
So im guessing my 750 hp estimate is really on the conservative side?

It will be worth waiting for and should make lots more power, especially on a set of high flowing set of ported p51's

just make sure when you order everything for this engine you make sure you specify that it will be running SCJ/P-51 heads so they will get you the right pistons, they are not just a bolt on head without piston change..... or notching pistons to fit.....

Thanks randy.
I noticed the scj/p-51's had diffrent valve angles. the shortblocks already done (bought it complet all forged) so im probably either going to swap pistons or just cut new reliefs

Too Much Cam, Not enough Convertor or Gear if you want it to run like it should.
Get the compression down to about 11:1 and put a reasonable street cam in it 250ish intake and 260ish exhaust at .050 and stay under .700 lift its much easier on springs. it will live a long time and make as much power as your chassis and tires can handle......

how much power would i be leaving on the table with something that small?
chasis is pretty stiff as is although hooking up is something im still working on.
im looking to hit mid to low 10's but still keep the rpms down below 3000 at 60 so thats why the gear. just going to try and make my torque work for me

It won't leave very much at all on the table, in fact it will make more torque.
You don't want to try and run big drag cams in stuff like your building if you are going to run at low RPM under loads, you will have all kinds of drivability issues and reversion, it will be plain misserable to drive.

very true. cars street driving consists of mostly highway so im trying to make torque about 2500 and up to hold it under load.
so 750 hp doable with uper 600's on lift?

You will not get everything, you will need to compromise somewhere, Either you want a race engine or you want something that will run down the road under load at 2500, on pump gas....

Re: top end setup and cam ideas for my 557 build.
checked and replied.
dfree383,
im fully aware of compromise and of how unfriendly pump gas is to high compression but ive burned 12:1 on a boost controller system in an open chamber cast iron head with no detonation. Im hoping for the same results here.
As for the cam after looking at the whole combo im probably going to run a cam close to the specs you came out with.

X2.
You don't want to find out how much compression is too much for your combo. The gain is small, but the risk is to risk it all.
