Switch to Alcohol
Hey guys,
Throwing around the idea of switching to an alcohol Carb Set-up for next year. How well do the BBF respond to this fuel. I currently have a 521 with CJ heads N/A,
roller cam, bracket car currently running on C-12. My primary reason is to add a little more consistency and the added cooling benefits. My car is pretty consistent now just looking to tighten it up even more. How much extra cooling are we really talking about???
On a warm July day here in Maryland after a 1/4 mile shot and return to the pits I'm right at 200 degrees. Does the cooling effect transfer to cooler water and oil temps?
What about exhaust temps? This Big Block stuffed into the Fox Body just feels like a heat soak after going a few rounds.
My fuel system now consist of an 8gal fuel cell, Bg 280 pump, #8 lines to reg and #8 to the Pro Systems 1150. Will all of this have to go for the bigger fuel demand?
How hard are the alcohol carbs to tune? I realize there are extra maintenance issues with running alcohol, extra oil changes and such. Is the extra cost and effort
worth the benefits?
Let me hear your Pro's and Con's

Re: Switch to Alcohol
Rich, 2 word if your gonna switch "Rons Racing"
Alky is a very good choice IMHO.... I too use to run C-12 with a 514 CJ headed combo, and switched to the Rons Racing Toilet injection system. call them , give them your cars specs they will put a system together for you.
I have had no trouble out of mine & outta the box tune was real real close to what my car needed and is very consistant from cool temps to very hot (100* + days) now in cool temps make sure you keep the engine consistant operating temps....

Re: Switch to Alcohol
I would recommend injection with methanol. I run an enderle 5" butterfly injector and I have ran methanol , small % of nitro, m-5 and Q16 through it . Just takes different nozzles and barrel valve adjustment to run gas.

You'll actually find it a challenge to build heat. Good problem to have. I too would highly recommend www.killerrons.com

Re: Switch to Alcohol
I've ran alky for years on both my cars. Carb set on my Mustang and injection on my Tbird. Both are killer consistant. I ran a 280 BG pump dead headed for 10 years on my Mustang. I'd run it till it pukes and then upgrade. Good luck with it. It'll run lot cooler on alky

Re: Switch to Alcohol
My car's heats up on Alky just as fast as gas. But , I have a leanout solenoid valve in my carb spacer that I open up till the 160* opens up.

RE
I know many guys that don't run water in the block when running on alky. What are you guys doing? running it through the heads, block or both? Just curious as I am going to run alky in my new motor.
Re: Switch to Alcohol
run water through the heads and block, carb deals need a small radiator, inj not so much.

Re: Switch to Alcohol
I always run the water pump, but I don't turn the fan on until I stage. My trans cooler fan is on the same circuit, but temperature activated.

Re: Switch to Alcohol
I do it a little backwards lol
I use my primer plus on gas in staging and get it up to 180 or so.
Then I use the fan and water pump to cool it back down to the 160 I like to stage at. I have more control over it bringing it down than trying to get it warmer at the last minute.
During the run it's water pump only, no fan to save on electrical draw.

Re: Switch to Alcohol
Yeah Dave, my fans turn on automatically at 180. Trans and radiator.
But I start my burnout at 150 and warm up from there.
