Whats good for removing oil/grime off frame
Got my project down to the frame and axles and the frame around the engine and transmission area have quite a bit of oil/grime build up. I scrapped everthing down with a putty knife last night and used a couple cans of NAPA engine degreaser, but wasn't satisfied with the results. Is there anything out there that will do a better job?

Try oven cleaner, or I've used some stuff called awsome, found at dollar general or family dollar stores. These are stores names in nw oh, don't know if you have them in your area

I like Simple Green. Let the SG soak on there a while, then wash off. A pressure washer works best after the SG soak. That stuff will make an engine bay look like new.

Easy off oven cleaner works great other than the smell. spray it on let it set for 20-30 minutes then pressure wash off(preferably with a zero degree rotating nozzle)2500 psi or higher washer

I've had good results with the oven cleaner as well. A pressure washer works wonders too. I've used purple power mixed to the correct mixture(ratio) and that works well too.

Purple power and a power washer, works great for most things. I use it a lot, I love it And if you plan on repainting it you could buy a can of paint stripper, which turns the paint into a cottage cheese like form then you pressure wash it off and you have bare metal. That stuff's powerfull though, if any gets on your skin you'll feel it

Once you scrape all the thick stuff off with a putty knife a good coat of WD40 and let that sit for an hour or so then your favorite degreeser and it will come out spotless.

Re: Whats good for removing oil/grime off frame
Thanks for all the reply's. I did a lot of scraping with the putty knife then ALOT of degreaser over the last 2 nights. I never even thought about the oven cleaner or WD40 trick. I was going to get the pressure washer out last night, but my daughter came home and was having a melt down because she wasn't receiving text's on her phone, so I had to call AT&T and work that issue out. (turnes out it was the sim card and we had to go to the local AT&T store to get it replaced). By the time that was solved, it was past dark and the tempuratures were supposed to really drop so I didn't have the time to get the pressure washer out, do the job then re winterize it. So I just scrapped and degreased some more and kept hitting it with the garden hose.
Finally got it down to the point that when I wire wheel those areas, the wheel won't get clogged up. After that the frame will get treated to a proper sand blasting.
What is a good frame paint treatment?

Re POR-15
What is the coverage rate on POR-15? I went to the website and read up on it, but really didn't find how much I need to buy to cover a complete frame.
Also, did you brush or spray it on?

Re: Whats good for removing oil/grime off frame
Have done brush and spray both you need to use alot of reducer with a normal spray nozzle but sell gives a great coverage. I believe I used 50/50 mix ratio. You may need to play with it a little bit to get it just right. You can brush it on as well but will use more I think ~2 quarts should come close brushing it on.

Thanks for the advice gents! Looks like I need to order some POR-15.
Re: Whats good for removing oil/grime off frame
Most parts stores or farm supply stores should have it on the shelf.

Por-15 is a great rust preventive coating but it has no UV protection and in my experience it does not hold up well as a finish coat when used by itself, it needs to be top coated. We've used a lot of Por-15 on our plow trucks, trailers and equipment and haven't been impressed. If you are going to go to bare metal you would be better off with an epoxy primer and then top coating it with Rustoleum or any automotive type single stage material.

Alan, that stuff goes a long way. 1qt. will probably do your complete frame. And another thing, don't worry about getting ALL the rust off, just the rust that is flaking. When you brush it on it will be a creamy white look and when it dries it will be really dark. It covers quick too.

Actually, on their website it says POR-15 is sensitive to UV and if exposed needs to be top coated.
POR-15® is sensitive to UV light (sun) and must be top coated for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Top coating is not required for areas not exposed to sunlight.

Just speaking from experience. We have plow trucks that the frames were painted with just Por-15 and others that were painted with Rustoleum and they have held up much better.
