c-460 Heads
Well i cant believe what i did but i just commited to a set of C-460's ...... so with that being said
couple of questions
what is the min. Bore size ?
i also noticed that everyone likes to get these things flowing to the max ...... do we have to have hughed flow numbers from these guys to see some good hp #s ?
i would like to keep the maintence down on these heads , springs etc...... so can we also match a smallish cam with these heads also ??
Lem have you done any baby c-460 deals ??

Re: c-460 Heads
Ford says a 4.600" bore minimum now. They used to say 4.500". Not sure what changed, I know people have run them on smaller bores than 4.600" with success. Not sure about the flow number situation, mine are doing 500+ on the intake, 360+ on the exhaust. I'd call Charlie, Nick, he could give you the straight story.

Re: c-460 Heads
i know Lem has said in the past that unshrouding the valves is whats helping me now ........ is my 4.560 bore give it plenty of " unshrounding"

Re: c-460 Heads
It's mostly about the size of the exh. valve [relative to bore size]....1.88" is big for this package ... 1.90"...not needed .
Re: c-460 Heads
im sure these are stupid questions here ....but here it goes ...... the only reason why we have to use Titanium vavles is due to the size and the weight ...correct ....
whats the reason some are shown with the Beryllium seats ........ in my industry we use Beryllium cause its the lightest and strongest of metals ....rare also which makes for a pricey pair of 6 1/2" component speakers (5999.00).... so is it needed on a nos built motor ???
and the c-460 head is an 18 bolt ...correct ...

Re: c-460 Heads
so i want to go with a single carb deal ... i gues there is only one intake to choose from ....... have we gotten any r and d from the last couple of years to help improving flow with the svo intake ... ive noticed in my readings that we are losing around 30 cfm of flow with that intake ....

I believe Charlie has done some work with the single four manifold and can improve on those numbers considerably. Like I said before, a call to him would be worthwhile, if you haven't already made one.
Also, Nick, don't make the mistake of trying to save a few bucks by going stainless valves over the titanium. That's a big mistake in my opinion. If I'd known you were in the market for a set of heads, we could have worked a deal on my set...

Trust me, Nick, I totally understand not being able to come up with all the money at once. Nothing to be ashamed of, that's my situation as well. Steve

Charlie and Lem are definetly both Excellent Sources and Resources for C460 heads, I think Charlies has 3-4 sets he's working on right now, Last time I was in his Shop.
Bruno's getting ready for the big time....... Now your going to need a chassis to go with them...... Momma ain't going to be Happy......

I definitely understand not being able to buy/build an engine all at once. That's why I take the Johnny Cash approach...One piece at a time..... And as Dave has labled it, "The Eternal Hemi" project is coming up on it's 5 yr anniversary. I feel like I should take it out to dinner or something. I was at the Sykes Bros. shop yesterday dropping off my block so they could check intake fit up. The hemi's are looking real pretty. Got me fired up again. It will be header building time soon. Just need some money..
So Nick is you game plan to keep your short block & change from the pistons up & keep it a 562?

Re: c-460 Heads
Game Plan ........
i need to consult Lem on this one but i would like to get a new rotating assembly, go to a 4.50 stroke, the bore---- i really dont know just clean up whats there , single carb , small cam and let her rip ....... hoping for 1100 -1150 on motor is that even possible ???
i will have a year to plan things out, collect parts , and getting work done ,
until then i will still be giving these edelbrocks a work out ........ they are not even breathing hard right now

Re: c-460 Heads
Put a 4.6" bore with a 4.5" crank for a 598, then that HP level is obtainable in my opinion.

Tough Call Nick, all depends on how much you got to spend. Talk with Charlie about Snowballs Build. IT was in the 1150 range with a single 4.

I agree with Chris. 1100 On one carb is doable, 1150 with a smallish cam could be a stretch.

Re: c-460 Heads
im being funny when i say smallist cam ...but i just hear horror stories about engine builds and springs failing from hugh amouts of seat pressure and large cams ???? maybe they havent set up there valve train correctly....... just dont want to open a new can of worms

Re: c-460 Heads
humm ... i just read snowballs's build ...sounds like 1100 might even be a stretch .... he has a lot of cam and a ton of compression ..... i still want to run the fogger ... no plate just a fogger

Re: c-460 Heads
Nick we have checked and with a 4.47 bore and a 1.80 ex valve there is only .039 cylinder wall to valve clearance.
I might have some c head parts you may be interested in. Pistons 4.560 bore and titanium exhaust valves.

Re: c-460 Heads
You also need to check out MikeP 's 548 inch build in a fox body with a 10.5 tire.
Like I said last nite, my 4.440 bore C head deal only netted .020 side clearance on the exhaust valve @ .800 lift. I have read where there is different castings as far as early and late that are noticably different. Brian Eyler had a set when I was doing mine, and his had a pronounced step at the valve seats where mine lookd to be more blended as cast.

X2 . 1,100ish with the correct componets is do-able .

so what is the ideal clearance for exhaust and intake?TravisRice wrote:You also need to check out MikeP 's 548 inch build in a fox body with a 10.5 tire.
