Hyper pistons and nitrous
How much have people sprayed on hyper pistons and lived to tell about it? I have sprayed 175 on a very mild motor with cast pistons for awhile but this motor makes probably 200 more n/a than that motor. I would like to do 82 squared (around 200) but im open to the horror stories. Its at least getting 150 no matter what.
Also I would upgrade pistons but it still has stock rods anyhow so its staying as is for now.

Nos + Hyper = boom
Hyper do not work well with nitrous they are way to brittle and will shatter....

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
We Sprayed about 200 hp on a 501ci motor for around 30 passes, with no problems.
BUT you do need to be careful with the tune-up!
Any detonation at all will result in piston failure..............

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
Ive been using nitrous for a few years with no major problems. Im going to start with 63 squared and take out 8 degrees to start with and work my way up to 82 hopefully. Thanks for the input. I know these KB pistons are sensitive so ill be careful.

Keith Black pistons are junk, i busted 8 of there forged pistons on a square tune up, be vary careful, unless you are ready to rebuild. I personally would not run the plate squared no matter who makes it rich is not safe. hopefully when those pistons were put in the rings were gapped loose. good luck

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
You can make some neat paper weights out of the pistons as they are dripping out of your headers!! LOL
I am paranoid about running them N/A, I have heard of folks getting away with them, but I wish I would have went forged for the peace of mind. The problem is so much other stuff gets damaged when a (or a few) pistons let go, lots of $$$.
Good luck!

I don't understand why a guy would push his luck..... For every guy that says he sprays a 300 shot on his speed pro hypers, there seem to be many more who have blown it all up with a 100 shot.
It just doesn't seem worth it to me.
A set of pistons is cheap, and it's not like you're buying insurance with them..... you NEED them!

I've sprayed 150 shot in my 71 torino 466 with no issues. Joe

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
I ran a set of Hyper in my STOCK 302 ho in my 83 gt mustang and broke 2 pistons it was my work driver and stock camshaft. no N2o at all. so I would never use them in anything again Period..... oh that was 3 days driving back and forth to work @ 65MPH for 10 miles.....so that was a total of 60 miles on them all together.....

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
What do you recommend I start with? I used to run the standard NOS jet spread before and never hurt anything. I switched to square and though that was a good place to start. Its a cheater kit btw.studly wrote:Keith Black pistons are junk, i busted 8 of there forged pistons on a square tune up, be vary careful, unless you are ready to rebuild. What everybody is trying to tell you start with.... is a good set of Pistons.

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
Duane (from the old forum) occasionally ran a little nitrous on factory cast pistons in his old "junk yard" backup 460 for years. But he was probably able to do this for years because it has low factory compression numbers, & small nitrous (either 150 or 175 shot, I forget which) using the normal old NOS factory "safe" fat jet stagger.
But having said that for my money I wouldn't spend money on a new cast piston that saw any compression, nitrous, or RPM. Cast is fine for the daily driver, but forged for any racing type use/abuse.

^^^ Agree 100% with Dave
I've run my 429 with 11:1 and cast pistons reliably on a 'stock' 150HP NX tune, and probably survived due to the fat nature of the tunes
My end goal is many more cubes, so I'm merely adding experiences along the way

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
A good set of Ross NOS pistons would be my first suggestion but if you must destroy the engine try the 100 shot first reverse the jets nos/fuel put more nos than fuel run a good high octane fuel 110 or better and pull at least 4 more degrees of timing than what nos recommends and check the plugs every pass(kill the motor, drift to the side) and adjust timing as necessary i would keep the timing very low on this motor

Re: Hyper pistons and nitrous
We ran a set of KB hyper domes in the 306 for like 5 seasons, turned that motor 7600 on every run, lets just say the quench was tight enough the pistons never collected any carbon on them. Never had issues with the pistons, but would also never use anything but forged or billet on. That was the "no budget days"
