Hyper-u-cracked-it Pistons
Hey guys,
The more I read about the hyper pistons the more I wish I had used forged. I was talking to Lem about getting a set of the good ones for winter.
Anyone have any suggestions for other things to do to upgrade performance a bit?
Current:
466 Stock block/crank
eagle I beam rods
S/P hyper flat top pistons
Edelbrock performer RPM 95cc heads/cam/intake
750 Holley DP
Recurved duraspark
In a 1983 Thunderbird, mostly street want to keep running pump gas
C-6, 3.55:1 8.8 trac-loc
I was thinking of going forged flat top, deck block to 0 in the hole.
Any other thoughts?
Bill

Sounds like a good plan to me. A busted piston WILL ruin your day, ask me how I know.....on second thought I'll just tell ya, I had a speed pro hyper break in my 460.
Took out the block and a few valves.
Uncool.
The flat top and 95cc head will give you a nice streetable compression ratio, and the forged piston will put your mind at ease.
Frankly, I can't understand why a guy would save a couple of hundred bucks on a set of pistons once, only to worry about them every time he beat up on the engine thereafter.....and maybe have one let go and take out some expensive parts.
I know I regretted doing just that.....

X2 on not getting the best to begin with. I've got a SP hyper piston that I keep for a reminder every time I want to cheap out on something. It's in several pieces.Greg_P wrote:

I have run the crap out of Hyperyoucrackedit pistons in stock type rebuilds. But I agree with Greg. When I build my next motor with my shiny new SCJ heads, you can bet your @$$ I'm gonna use forged pistons. Who cares if you tear up junkyard stuff?

It runs real good now, I have to run 93 octane tho, I thought maybe getting more quench might help there.
I figured since I wasn't going to spray it the hypers would be fine. That was before I knew better . I tried to go with the best I could get at the time but the hypers were a major brain fart. I was looking to build a reliable strong engine that would last. Mechanical fuel pump, mechanical water pump, engine driven fan, trying to keep it simple.
.556/.581 lift - 234/244 @ .050 duration is the cam thats in it now.
Running Hooker Super Comps with 2 1/2 " duals with X pipe.
I haven't had it to the track yet but Edelbrock rates this combo at just a c hair over 500hp.
Thanks for the input guys!!

hypers work well. just have a good tune! over rich and you can kill them between the top &2nd ring land or detnation will blow a chunk out of them also. but in a case were only a few dollars for a forge update or all out race....it is a no brainer...forge all the way
