Cam gear material type...Iron or steel?
What dictates the choice? Is it the thrust surface metals or the cam type? I see where they offer steel and iron cam and crank gears. I've got a steel crank and a solid roller cam, but I'm using the factory retainer plate. Was looking at a Cloyes.
Thanks, Casey

W/roller, go w/billet steel and double roller set. Call Lem,he's the cheapest.

A steel cam gear is stronger than a ductile iron gear. The thrust plate used has to be a match to the gear.8liter wrote:What dictates the choice? Is it the thrust surface metals or the cam type? That's what I was thinking. Who makes a steel retaining plate? What about thrust bearings? I see they make them for the cam side as well as the gear side of the retainer.

What you need , i.m.o. , is a timing set with a steel top gear & a bronze retainer plate.
