Transmission options, overdrive? Empty Transmission options, overdrive?

Post  bb429power November 19th 2013, 6:56 pm

Over winter I want to build up my f100 to make some more power (about 1,000hp). In the process I would be upgrading the trans as well, but I would like to have something possibly with an overdrive so I can go on the highway driving to the track or a cruise without being at 3,000 rpm's. What would my options be? I would prefer something that I don't have to get another shifter to use, like maybe an electronic overdrive? I do NOT want a powerglide by the way. I was also thinking maybe no overdrive but just change out my 4.10's in the rear with something closer to a 3.00 gear set. I currently have a c6, and in the end with what ever trans I use I would also like to have a trans brake. My boss was mentioning a 4L80E swap with an adapter plate but I'd like to try getting something that is Ford or aftermarket.

Have you given any thought to a gear vendors overdrive unit? You could still use your existing transmission but gain 2-3 more gears depending on the type of unit you find. New they aren't cheap $, but you may be able to look around and be patient and find one someone is selling. I've seen them on flea bay and at swap meets. Columbus,OH swap meet is next weekend. Might be a good excuse for a road trip...

I have thought about it but the one's I've seen are very expensive. I've yet to go to the Columbus swap meet, how much high performance stuff is there?

They are kinda high justin, but are good pieces. All kinds of high performance parts at the Columbus swap meet. You can't fathom the parts that are there. The first time I went I was in awe. 3 buildings packed with ford parts

I'd like to make it out there, I'll see what the situation with work is and if my dad would be willing to go. If I'm going I want to bring him along. I may have to wait until the next one comes up. Thanks for the advice as well.

That's pretty cool, I will have to look into them more. Maybe I'll rollerize my c6 then add a gear vendor if I have the money.

For overdrive 4l80e all the way.  I sell everything needed for the swap.

A badass c6 and gear vendors would be cool too.

How much do you think it would cost to have a 4l80e built for 1,000hp with a transbrake and everything to make it bolt in? Minus the converter.

I will shoot you a pm when I get to work in the morning.  The last ones we did were for a lot more power so the price jumped dramatically.

Either 4L80E or E4OD would be nice too, and you've got the room to spare for any of these options. I thought about a 4L80 or GV if I ever grew a pair and built something for drag week. Alot of the BIG power dudes seem to trend toward the GV on a 'glide trans. So if nothing else, it's tough enough. I personally didn't know if a brake was available for a E4OD/4R100, but there are plenty of badass hard parts and converters to do whatever you need.

I was checking out the Lentech's, only issue is they only support 550ft-lbs in overdrive. The 4l80e was "supposed" to be a cheaper option but they look to be about the same as an AOD setup.

But the 4L80 has got to be a good bit stronger for the dollar I'd bet?

Id go w the E4od for the ease of the swap and their known durability if youre set on having od.The thing that was important to me when I researched this very topic was the ability to lock the convertor.

Realistically im not really gonna drive mine a lot and can't remember when I wanted/needed to drive it more than about 20 miles across town, and since 1/4 mi performance was actually my main goal I opted to go w a pg instead.
(I'm gonna put the E4od in my 77 f250 4x4 400m now Smile )

i'm running a 700r4 behind a 472 with 480hp and 600hp with nitrous with no problem... the 700r4 wont live with a 1000hp but the lock up is very nice to have for the eway... I have done drag week 3 times and most that run 1000hp plus use a gear vendor... most use PG or turbo 400 with the vendor

You must have been looking at the wrong page because Lentech makes AOD's for 1000+ hspr.

Yeah it holds 1500hp, but only 550 in the overdrive gear.

That "only in OD" thing doesn't mean anything. When you're cruising at 60 mph or whatever, you'll be loafing at about 2500 - 3000 rpm and won't be producing that kind of torque. No, you shouldn't mash it in OD, ever.

Bill Fowler has had a LenTech AOD in his car for like 7 years and has run multiple Drag Weeks in his BBF powered 4000lb, 71 Mustang running high 9's. His car has over 1000 hp and he said the tranny does just fine. Exclamation

An AOD is going in my ride, and I'll be doing Drag Week, as well.

That's a BA unit for sure, also gettin up there in $. To me, that would be a great unit if you're low on space, NOT the case in our F-100, you got a friggin cave compared to cars. I'm betting you can get into either an E4OD or 4L80E for a bit less, but that's a guess. Also, those units have aftermarket parts AND are bigger by design. So some stock parts may fly, and most certainly any aftermarket drums, planets, etc, would be stout enough. I still like the GV deal, but if lockup is on the list, I'd be going with one of the big OD's if it was mine.

X2 don't think you will use wot in 4th gear and lockup unless your doing Bonnie or the standing mile... I have used lockup in third a few times does help et but takes out the converter TCC after 20 or so times been there done that

Yeah, most builders I've spoken to say get rid of lock up above like 700 or so hp.

I guess those E4ODs can handle it though...but that's a big sucker!
