Tow rig question Empty Tow rig question

Post  Mike R February 2nd 2014, 11:34 pm

I've got an 88 F150 with a 300 six and a 5 speed. Am I dreaming thinking I can pull my wagon on an open trailer any kind of distance? Is there anything I can do to improve it's performance? I only ask because it runs like a watch and has never given me any trouble.

Use it.
You got it, runs good. Maybe you don't get to pull it 75 mph but if you're ok with that, I say go for it.

Good Truck/Engine combo. Had a 1993 300 six and it was stronger than the 1995 302 my son has now. With a 5 speed and 3.73 to 4.10 it should pull well for a half ton. If you throw a RV type cam and header it may pickup a little HP, but may not be worth the expense. The rear gear is where I would start, if you have 3.55 or higher. 8.8" Explorer 3.73/4.10 pullout gears and TracLoks are cheap on ebay, usually under $200, and can be had in good shape.

mike I tow my zephyr to brainerd with a v6 two wheel drive f150. maybe takes an extra half hour. who cares. certainly the inline has lots more torque than my sewing machine does....the only thing i would worry about is the clutch on your truck,,,,,zbob

The tracloc and 3.73's out of my axle will be available in a few weeks. The posi clutches are good and everything. Junk yard said the vehicle had 40k miles on it.

Good brakes on truck and trailer as well proper hitch weight/height and balance. Moving it forward should not be a problem.

Thanks for the replies fellas. The cab is getting rotten but you can buy everything you need to patch it up and like I said, it runs like a watch. I just wasn't sure if it would pull the load. And Bob, I know I keep saying it, but one of these days I'm going to run up there and we can wreck a 12 pack while I check out your car that actually moves Laughing Laughing Laughing

A 300 six is a pretty indestructable torquey motor. I towed with a 96 f150 for quite a while. Itll be fine.
