Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
Which of the 2 drums seem to be holding up the best, between welded or the sleeve ??

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
I replaced a brazed drum with a sleeved one. Sleeved one seems to be holding up fine. Brazed one cracked and stripped out all the teeth.

I thought the sleeve one' was what gave on my c4' but after i got it apart it was fine, it was the pump drive gear broken in 4 places...The outer seized up and broke the drive or the drive broke and metal got around the outer...I was just doing a burnout and lost all gears....PTC says they think i just got a bad pump...I bought the pump rebuilt from transtar, it was a C5 pump, but i have ran them before on the c4's with no problem...Not sure what happened...I ordered a PA pump from jegs...

one on the left is what Ive been runming.
dont wast the $$$$$ if your combo makes the power it should you will go to a glide or get real good at putting clutches in that c4.
side note, PA stuff is junk I got two of their C4s here apart that proves it.

I have never had clutch problems...I would put a c6 in it before i would put a glide in it...Remember! I dont mix-breed lol

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
My brother uses the drum on the right and
Has been 5.30s with his c4 , drum holds
Clutches don't but you can make a c4
Last a little while , go to a glide and be done!

I say this, then I will go hide. Ford Engine+Chevy trans+ 9" rear= Good race Car, Glide or TH400. C4's, C6's and TH350's only can go so for in the HP department. By

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
Jon knows he was taking his c4 out almost every weekend to work on it, I took him a glide and he put it in and hasn't taken it out in like 4 years. To you guys that are no cross breading Ford actually sold the glide to Chevy....I love the fact I can launch it and 1 click and it is done let the Torque pull it out the back door..... don't have to worry about 1,2 2,3 flare and or crappy drums and broken parts in a c4.

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
I did not say a C6 would not work or that they are junk. They have their limitations is all. A built up C6 with one of Frank's valve bodies might be better than the C-4 if he is pushing some serious HP.

You must speak of them redneck c4's.....lol
I have a steel billet fwd drum & a aluminum billet direct....I use PA's transbrake with NO FLARE! I use a higher low gear set also....7+7 clutches...The little C4 is hangin in there....And so am i ...

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
Jaguar was at one time purchased by FoMoCo and they used a roller-ized Turbo Hydra-Matic 400.
A "low drag" 400 will hold-up to just about anything ... if you can "hook it up" with a 3 speed.
The same attachment as a Powerglide, too.

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
The TH400 can have it's problems too.
It can hande decent power numbers with the usual TH400 upgrades (such as upgrading the OEM sprag bearing to aftermarket). But they can often start having problems burning up clutches when you combine HP numbers over 1000HP+ with RPM's in the 8500 and above range. The first problem is as it runs into/past this higer RPM range the OEM TH400 front pump design starts to have a cavatation problem resulting in a line pressure drop that's enough to let the clutches start slipping a bunch. The other problem is it's hard on the clutches at these RPM's when the heavy OEM drums take time to spool-up to speed during the gear changes.
Replacing the OEM TH400 drums with aftermarket aluminum drums helps part of this situation a bunch by reducing roataing weight so everything spools-up to speed faster. The high RPM pump cavatation problem can be cured with a special TH400 anti-cavatation front pump from Steve Griner. Along with the front pump Griner also offers a TH400 trans brake with better line pressure numbers than what the other brand's off the shelf TH400 trans brakes have.

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
You also get into input shaft diameter, with different transmissions. Yes I know they make hardened ones. They also make hardened ones for the larger diameters also. Don't see to many Buick GN's running in the 7's with a TH200, do you. You get to a certain HP level, and the smaller transmissions, just don't cut it very long. The C6 front pump bushing coment, was pretty close to the truth I am afraid. The C6's have come a long way, but the the TH400's are tough customers, and have more aftermarket support, just like the Glides. If your C4 is working good, more power to you. Put some more nitrous to if you have not allready, and let us know then. I would also not be to keen on a brazed drum. A frozen/heated pressed fit sleeve, won't fracture, if done correctly.

We have sprayed 400 on them all day long....On this new build im starting out with 175 on the first fogger and get the tune right, then adding the 275 second fogger...Then go from there....

Re: Strongest C4 Forward Drum ??
Thats all I was getting at. You said the SBF was in the high 8's. If you turboed it or put more HP on the SB it might not like that either at a certain point.richter69 wrote:I spray 350 on my sbf/c4 w no issues. The bbf car pissed it off though.
