Valve covers interfering w/ springs
Just installed some 1.625 springs with a 2" installed height in my P-51s. I am trying to install my FMS tall valve covers and the left most spring (when standing on the side of the engine) on both sides (at the number 4 and 5 cyl) is hitting the curved pocket area where the bolt hole is. It is preventing the valve cover from correct alignment with the bolt holes. Has anyone else run into this? What is the fix?

Yes, we have all run into that ever since the SCJ heads and then later the P-51 heads came out. I grind on the bolt boss and try not to break through. Others do break through and then weld a patch panel on the outside. Just deal with it and make'em fit.

That combination of 1.62+ inch diameter valve springs with that style SCJ type head and FRPP valve covers were not a match.
Grind the cover to get enough clearance as Charlie has said.
Before I even start, I get a 1.5" length of 1/4" inner diameter aluminum pipe welded in that valve cover space and use a longer bolt in that location. Then you can grind a whole bunch away inside for clearance and not break through.

Grind on the covers problem solved

Fabbed covers
Do all the fabricated style covers eliminate the issue? Is the PRW cover worth looking at? I hate to spend the extra $ if it doesn't make my situation better.

I have 2 sets of the 4 1/2" tall Moroso from Kaase on the A460 heads that had to be ground down as well. Even after you think you have enough clearance the springs ra around and still has minor contact. I was rechecking mine after running the motor to warm up am lashing the valves. I even rechecked after the first race of the season and still had to do some more minor clearancing

I think you are misunderstanding the problem ... a different gasket will not move the valve cover sideways.

After re-reading it I am indeed wrong. Thanks Randy.

Not wrong because what you said does indeed happen however, simply misunderstanding the problem HERE.
Re: Valve covers interfering w/ springs
This issuue did not start yesterday. Back in the '80s I had a set of the Ford M-6049-A460 heads & a set of Moroso stamped steel valve covers ....the springs chewed on the covers as mentioned.
I sanded the sharp edges & hit the afflicted area with a ball-peen hammer and moved on.
