I need help with a standard 460.
We have done a lot of work to this thing to get it running but it still defies us. It was not starting after it got warm. You could start it up, run it do all you want to do but when you turned it off it wouldn't start until it cooled down. (it has 160,000 miles and low compression in one cylinder.)Then it would run fine until it got hot again. it needed a new cat. It was leaking. We put a new one on. A muffler shop. Then we did all the normal stuff of cap, wires and tune up. Nothing. The we thought maybe it was fuel. We sent it to a shop and they replaced the pumps in the dual tanks. Nothing again. The shops weren't helping us so we started to do more. We replaced the 6 way valve on the tanks figuring the internal filter was clogged. Each time we opened the shrader valve on the fuel rail it had plenty of pressure. We thought it may be too much. Then we also cleaned out the fuel lines. Nothing. The we have a back up throttle body and switched that. Nothing. Coil. Nothing. We give up and gho back tot he shop and they say it was the distributotr. Nope that didn't work either. Does anyone have any ideas?

Bad coil, bad starter. Bad ignition switch?
Will it at least turn over when it's hot? That rules out the starter.

Did you visually check spark when cranking hot?

Sorry I missed some replys because I ddin't understand how the posts worked.
The starter is good. It cranks but won't start. It will soemtimes catch with slight peddle feathering. But it generally dies shortly after. I have not checked for visual spark. But we have put in a new districutor and the coil pack on the side (sorry forget the name).

The compression test
Only one cylinder was low. I will have to repost the actual numbers. But the truck does burn oil. I goes through about a quart a week.
When it is cool it runs great. It idels very smooth. It accelerates fast. The only problem is when it's hot. It is almost like it is starving for fuel. But I am afraid it may also be electrical but I don't know where else to look.

The fuel may be boiling in the bowls. Try an insulating carb spacer. Make sure fuel line is not near heat source. Insulate any that are.

So dizzy and coil are fresh, but you haven't ruled out the possibility of not having a spark. It's easy to do, costs nothing and will provide additional information.

Sensor ,MAF, MAP, crank, temp. Try bypassing the temp sensor and see if it starts when warm.

To all more info...I got the truck back and the mechanics said we were good to go. This time he got it. Five Milesian later stuck on the side of the road. Today they replaced the high pressure pump on the frame rail. It was interesting that when it was dying I hit the fuel tank switch and it caught and starting running again. I drove for several miles and problem was gone. I tryed the other tank within a few miles it was dead again. I switched tanks back again and I think I've solved the problem. t try it one last time. Try the other tank , in minutes it cuts out again. This time no luck the truck dies and won't restart.
