SCJ headed 463
here is what I have got going on and would love to get some guesses on what it should make on HP and TQ, I have a idea on what I think but I have only done Chevy's before and this is only my second BBF build for me, the first one was almost stock 429 with a roller and a Dommy so this really is my first good build with the blue oval badge, so what do y'all think. I have a offset ground 429 crank (3.830) stroke and 2.200 rods I used aluminum rods and .030 460 flat tops and its 12.1 with .055 quench, I also bought a set of aluminum SCJ's that have been worked a little they flow 380 intake and 265 exhaust @ .700 lift the cam is .739/.729 and 275/285 @ .050 and a worked over Victor 460 with my 1050 E-85 dommy, I'll post pics soon, I also have a .700/.721 and 258/267 @ .050 if the smaller cam will work better please let me know, thanks Bean

I don't have a guess, but I like the sound of it. I will one day build something similar.

Re: SCJ headed 463
I'll guess about 720 @ 7100, should run well.
Could probably use more compression w/ the .050 numbers, what is the cam C/L?
Also why the 3.83 stroke, is the 429 crank steel?
Sheldon
Also just wondering where you are getting E-85, don't think there is any around here.

Re: SCJ headed 463
Are you class racing or did you had some stuff laying around and picked up some odd parts cheap?
I would have got a cast stroker crank and made a 521 or 545 out of it, your heads flow decent enough to make some great power with the inches.
My guess is 665ish on the hp.

Thanks
First I would like to say thanks for the replies good or bad, I know I'm kinda new on here but I have a great deal of respect for you guys that have built killer engines and posted them here for guys like me to learn, anyway STR-LGL-70 we have a few E-85 stations down here in SW. Florida but not a bunch, I can go over to Miami and the stations are every where and its only 3.00 a gallon, dfree383 yes I got the block fresh and the crank, rods and pistons for 500. but the pistons would not work 2443's so I traded them for flat tops, and everything else is used, cam, lifters, pushrods, timing chain, heads and intake so I hope it all will jell and make pretty good power, the cam choice I'm not sure about so thats why I'm asking, Blake, I know you do a lot of engines for guys on here so would you go with the smaller cam for a little extra TQ or go big and gain HP and loose a little TQ????? I know I have not been posting a lot on here but I look every day, I like this site a little bit better because its more race oriented (friendlier) than the other site, it seems like the other site is more into street type engines and I'm a bracket racer and have been for a long time, so thanks again and any opinions will be appreciated
I posted the cam wrong its .700 IN/.721 EX and 258 IN/267 EX @ .050 IN CL 108 EX CL 112 LSA 110

Re: SCJ headed 463
The bigger cam will gain almost as much power, (at about 400 or so higher RPM), as it loses in torque. The largest difference will be in that area UNDER the peak torque RPM so, it all really depends upon how it is gonna be used.
Re: SCJ headed 463
Thanks Randy, its going into a bracket car and I'm not trying to rotate the earth just want to go rounds and keep shift points under 7000 more like 6600 to 6800, I tried to call you on thurs. but got the answering machine, need to talk to you about the cam bearings you sell thanks

Re: SCJ headed 463
Hey Man, glad to see the project is coming along. You should make good power, you've seen how my truck runs and its only got Alum. CJ heads, and only 10:1 comp, you should be in the 700 neighborhood I would guess. Looking forward to seeng you get it out to the track, are you and Scott going to make the trip up to run a couple days of the 5-day? I'm planning Fri-Sun, maybe Mon...

Re: SCJ headed 463
going to Immokalee today starts at 1:00 they started there 5 day yesterday and they are paying 12,000. to win each day, I will be coming up to the bradenton deal to hang out on sat so I'll see you there, scott don't do the big money deals, thanks for the kind words on my build, its taken way to long but I think it will be worth the wait, I've already started getting parts for engine #2 going to be a 545 deal with the same heads and intake should make 100 to 150 more HP

Ok, let me know how the turnout is in Imokalee. I was thinking about heading down there on Sat, but not going to. I'll see you at BMP on Sat, hopefully I'll be going rounds! Good luck on the build!

Re: SCJ headed 463
The E-85 is probably forgiving enough but I would get the quench tighter, say .004-,005" the engine will make more torque with the tighter quench. I had a very similar cam to the smaller one you listed in my 523 and the best shift point with that was 7100, with the smaller cubes you will probably be ~600-800rpm's higher for best shift point.

Re: SCJ headed 463
Thanks Eric but it has aluminum rods and BME said .020 more than a steel rod so I'm kinda pushing it now, I think I will advance it a little more than what I was going to, its a 108 center and I was going to put it at 106 but I may put it at 104ish and let it RIP, (not rest in piece) LOL!!!

Asking for my own curiousity, would a factory crank live for very long shiting at 7100+ evey pass??

Good deal, shame about the locals, but hey, the big money guys are tough! Heard the car count was so-so, but im sure it will get bigger tonight and on the weekend.

Re: SCJ headed 463
with light pistons, quality rods and machine work yes the will live at that level.514F-1 wrote:bigblok2000ranger wrote:The E-85 is probably forgiving enough but I would get the quench tighter, say .004-,005" the engine will make more torque with the tighter quench. Re: SCJ headed 463
thanks Dave, I'm not sure because I wasted almost 30 years building and racing chevy's, 514-F1 has a FRPP 514 crate motor and I'm not sure but I think it has that big rod journal 4.300 cast crank??? so if we freshen it up when he's ready a .030 will make it 521, will that crank hold up for what he's doing? just brackets and no NOS? and i'm not sure whats he's turning it but I hope he gives me the chance to freshen it up, at 521" it will need more camshaft too???

Yeah it's got a cast crank in it, it never sees more than about 6300, I could turn it harder, but I like to take it easy on it. Cam is pretty good, it's not what came in the crate, its a .692/.726 lift. Pretty sure my crank is good to 700 or so, but I'm not sure. BTW I heard Brad Snowball won immokalee last night...good win for the BBF

Re: SCJ headed 463
hey Sheldon thanks for asking, got the rest of my bottom end stuff in and got it all cleaned up, started to assemble the pistons and rods and got a call from my sister and found out mom is in the hospital, so I've been dealing with that just about all week, going back today in about 30 minutes, she is getting better and should get out mon or tues. all I have to do is assemble it, I still need a set of stud girdles and a better oil pan, I'm going to use the oil pan until I get a better one, Has anyone welded a baffle in the fox swap pan to keep the oil from running up the back of the block????? kinda thinking about doing it to mine, it should help

Re: SCJ headed 463
You can probably get some ideas from some pics online & do something similar. I've got the big rear sump truck oil pan in mine(F600 0r F800?) along with a welded in baffle and the ford motorsport windage tray.
Hope your mom gets well soon.
Sheldon
