stock truck pull, finally!!
Well, I posted 1.5 years ago I was gonna do it, and its finally time. Stock truck pull is in 5 days. To refresh your memories, 95 f350, crew cab, 3.55 gears, e4od, 35" bfg mud terrains. Bone stock 460 efi. I have one shot to do this in front of all my pals. I'm torn between low range and first gear, or low range and second gear. What's the advantage of higher wheel speed if my tires aren't spinning? I mean, maybe they'll break loose, but i have zero clue what's gonna happen. Advice?
Thanks guys!

Your going to have to pull in 4 low, first gear. Otherwise you won't have enough umph. and those 35's are going to work against you since you are bone stock. Put smaller tires on if you can. If the track is tight, you need to roll on the gas, and get it WOT quick because you will need to get your rpm and wheel speed up way before the sled weight starts coming on you.
If you could put track bars on the rear to prevent axle wrap that would help you a lot.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty worried about the springs floppin' around. One thing i didn't mention was the shackle flip out back and reverse up front. The driveshaft angle is nice in back, but I've got some wicked degree shims on the front to help caster and driveshaft angle, and it's still not awesome. Wonder if i could fab something up in the next few days for the rear wrap bars........
Thanks again!

Are you running any lift? If so, then you will more than likely have a bucking problem. Also, as I stated earlier, 35" tires with 3.55 gears and a stock motor is not a good combination. I'm not trying to bust your bubble, but just to give you an idea of what to expect. Below is a link to my very first pull. My truck was purpose built, but I had a lot of learning to do. The motor was a 460 changed to carb (in the video I didn't have a big enough squirter) and running flat tops, a bigger cam, edelbrock performer rpm airgap and an 850 dp, going through a C6 with a stock converter and BW1356 with 4.10 gears rear Lincoln locked and Detroit locker in the front with 33" tires, stock springs in front with a blocked rear with custom ladder bars.
The track was very tight and the sled was an old boat anchor, but you can see that even with the stats above, I was not able to get a lot of rpm out of it. Your situation will be similar or worse with the gear/tire combination and springs.

The second video is the same year but a few months later, I was learning but still was short on power.

if your worried about buckin , you might think about a little less hitch height. that is if its adjustable, I find on a loose track, I can add a little more, on a tight track I always use less,,

Thanks for all the replies! Today's the day, gotta go check in in an hour. Built a cheesy front traction bar to help keep the pinion from rolling down and separating the driveshaft. This is gonna be against pure stock guys for the most part, i pretty much just want to not break and not come in last place! I know its not really set up very well for a pull. Maybe I'll get "the bug" and take another shot next year!

Well, 6th place out of 8. No breakage. 'Bout 20 feet in, i pulled er into 1st gear (2nd was just gutless). Missed 5th place by 6 feet......and I forgot to turn off the AC....maybe that would have made a difference! Thanks for all the advice!

I think Ward and I might put AC in our race cars.

No breakage is the best part of a pull. Stay in first to get your rpm and ground speed up.

Dude, there were many pulls where the outside temps were north of 90. I was wishing for either a cool suit or A/c in the truck lol.
