C4 leaking
I have 97 cobra with 521 with a little over 600 hp. Supposed to be built c4 but after about 200 miles major leak coming from middle front of trans. It runs down front middle pan and it leaks fast really fast
I barely made it 35 miles and I barely made it in garage. I read a little and they say pump gasket but I want to fix this once and be good for awhile so any help would be great. really want to make muscle car day on 27th and run this beast so I appreciate any help at all

Re: C4 leaking
Looks like a pretty common problem. From what I gather there were some bad gaskets floating around in the rebuild kits that are thin and some don't cover the ports fully. Looks like PA makes a .030 thick gasket that is supposed to be good. Some guys are using Loc Tite Gasket Maker on the gaskets and seal also if it has one.

Re: C4 leaking
Thank you very much. I owe you one.... 28$ for shipping is quite ridiculous but not much of a choice
I'll order up and start dumping trans today

Do you happen to know which loctite to use? I found 518 and 515 so far on amazon and just want the correct one.

Re: C4 leaking
I have never messed with C4's and was just relaying you some quick info from other sources. I would contact PA or another top C4 builder on the Loc Tite deal before you use it, you may not need it with their gasket. I would also inquire on putting a couple of studs to aid pump/bell housing assembly, as this seems to also be a problem area. One thing that came to mind on this deal was are you running solid engine and transmission mounts? It may not have anything to do with your leak, but a lot of guys used to crack cases by not running all solid mounts. Just something to think about while you are working on it. Wish I could be of more help.

Re: C4 leaking
If the C4 books are anything like the C6 ones, good luck. You can get a ATSG manual for basic stock units. You will have to pay for DVD's for the advanced high performance stuff, and I have no idea if they are any good as I have not bought any.6jeff6 wrote:And best book to get so I don't mess up c4?

I'm all solid mounts. I got it out at a 11 last night. If it was built would there be a sticker or tag somewhere?

Re: C4 leaking
Maybe, maybe not. A lot of people and shops build transmissions and not everyone puts a tag on them. When you get it apart you will have a better idea what has been done. Look at some of the race parts for C4's on the net, and compare them to what you have. Does it have a transbrake, or full manual valve body?

http://diyford.com/assemble-ford-c4-transmissions-cruise-o-matic-select-shift/ Here's that C4 book for free I mentioned in a previous post. Like I said it is pretty old and dated, but still helpful.

Re: C4 leaking
It's got the pro trans brake I think they call it? Push button to go in reverse and push button when in drive and it locks both reverse and 1st. Also does have manual valve body that works nice

Re: C4 leaking
Look in the book on the link. It gives the casting numbers for the C5 case. Might want to check your's and see what it is.

E2 E3 E4 E5 E6 is for the C5 case, just curious if they used one for your build.

Re: C4 leaking
I would say that is a 1982 C5 case, which is good.

Re: C4 leaking
I found another little trap for you. That C5 case should have a fine band adjustment thread. C4 is coarse thread, so be careful on your adjustment, they are probably different.

Did you get that ATSG manual to download? Photo Bucket is a pain, we had problems with it also.
