Bent pushrods - C8VE
So I finally got around to pulling some parts off the 460 that was my dads. He bought it in 03 and he fired it up a few times. It seemed to run fine. Last year I tried to start it and it was a no go. He bought the 68 Mark III as a donor for engine to go in the AC Cobra. I pulled the intake today because I had plans to sell it. This is what I found..
This engine is filthy! Not sure what oil the previous owner used but I would stay away from it. Doesnt look like they even changed the oil.
What do you think caused the pushrods to bend?

Valves not opening would be my guess.

and it looks like water/moisture was introduced, hence the rust...good news is looks original/virgin like so it should clean up fine to a mild over bore.

Re: Bent pushrods - C8VE
My original post should have been reworded. My impression was that a valve was stuck. Like I said, my dad had this running around 7 years ago but it was only a couple times and it was only for a minute or so each time. I probably caused the damage last year when trying to start.
As for the cylinders, I could not feel any ridge of any sort. Just some carbon at top section of cylinder. No step at all in cylinder wall.
Now to decide which direction to go. I have another post on here where I picked up another engine because it was already rebuilt and came with dove heads. Found out that I cannot use the pistons in that build. My original plan was to rebuild this and use.

If that is a CJ intake and a CJ carb it is worth serious money like $1,000.00 if it was a original not relist QJet? Don't get hustled if it is. Keep the heads with the intake they look like they have been port madched. You may wan't to do like I said and build that one in memory of your late Father.

Doesn't appear to be a CJ carb. I believe an original CJ Q-jet would have a straight fuel inlet and a divorced choke.

I think you are correct on the carb. and it is hard to tell on the intake but the ports look CJ size and the heads look cut to match. Either way it's a nice setup and I would hang on to it. Good gas mileage deal too.

I will try to get a part number on the carb.
I have the heads soaking in cleaner. So far they are turning out quite well. The intake cleaned up very well. My plan was to sell the intake and carb. Not sure what its worth. Any thoughts?

It's NOT a CJ intake. Closer looking will reveal a carb adapter. Heads are no CJs either , no guide plates for one plus the ports are small.

Your cylinder bores looked very nice to me. I did not see anything that would not likely hat tank out. Never said they were CJ heads just that they looked belled to CJ size. I did see the carb spacer on second glance. Been pretty covered up with the flood and no sleep for about 40 hours, so I am slipping a little.

By the casting number looks like a SCJ just like mine, to me. 150-$250 for another one. Holley to Qjet carb adaptor. Will work really nice with a well tuned Big QJet and get Excellent Mileage and run real well. Don't ever sell a QJet short, big mistake and I am a Holley man.

Re: Bent pushrods - C8VE
Yours ( intake )is a C8 casting revision B. It may bring more to the right restorer. I would run it myself and the DOVE's if they are cut to match. My D2's worked really well with the same deal a 750DP Holley and 8.5/1 or so compression on a 429 with some squueze. Ran pretty good without the gas also. With another point or two of compression it would have been even better but, I did not want to blend race gas to spray it and DOVES cost more and did not see buying them on a budget build back in 1995 for what I was doing. My cylinders had a small ridge a tad more then yours and I just honed it out and re-ringed it. After a 100 or so lbs of NOS they still look the same and are going back together on engine #1.jruppert wrote:I will try to get a part number on the carb.

Re: Bent pushrods - C8VE
The carb is a Rochester Quadrajet. I got a feeling that my dad put this carb on. That being so, I am sure I have the motorcraft carb in the garage. I know of 2 or 3 sitting in the back collecting dust.
My thoughts are to sell both the carb and intake and go with an RPM intake with either a 750 (that I already have) or an 850.

Remember of those nasty looking heads I posted earlier? This is what they look like after 24 hours of soaking in my cleaner.

OK Send me the intake if you don't want it and I will take the carb. Got plenty of adapter. Still not saying it's a CJ carb. But pretty certain on the SCJ intake Part.
Hetre is mine with an 4780 800DP I just got with a electric choke conversion I put on. Should run better then a QJet but, single digit gas mileage is a given in a full size truck.

Need a boat around here. Man what a mess.
This will get good mileage with a progressive linkage and would look nice on a kit car also. Not for sale though. I know where another one is with CJ ports if you want one though?
