Its never good
We went to test&tune to set up for the 5.70 class at Steele and finally got the susp. sorted out and then this happened
There was about a 45 min of silence in honor of my dead motor. It's been a hard yr. for my racing not sure when I'll be able to get it back togather, guess it depends on what I have left when I get it apart but it doesn't look good from the outside. The front main's were laying on the track, they used a bucket to pick up all the pieces.

I hope they are some you can save but I beleive you will have to have a new short block maybe none of the pistons hit a valve and the heads are ok but that is a big maybe the crank broke at the front main
sorry to hear about your engine maybe all the uuuuugly stuff is outside and not inside

It was a cast crank. It had a lot of hard pass's I knew I was pushing my luck but I couldn't resist. That was a motor pass but it had alot of nitrous pass's on it.It had gone 5.60,s in the past.I was going to work on setting up the progressive nos but didn't get that far. Looks like I'll be starting over.It was making a good bit more power since Blake worked the heads and intake.Ya'll keep a eye out for a decent rotating assem. block and or short block.Lack of funds will prevent a A460 block right now since I just bought the 65 for Wyatt. I may pull it out this weekend and see what is left.I'll be happy if the heads aren't ruined.Ther was no oil in the headers I pulled the plugs none of them had been hit and all the rocker arms seemed to be in adjustment.Just by spinning the push rods none of them felt bent so I hold out some hope they are ok.

It was a prof. products. There was nothing high dollar in the motor 2 bolt block that David willingham worked for me a few yrs back and a basic 514 flat top kit.I got a lot of runs/fun out of it.TravisRice wrote:Ward that sucks. What make is the balancer ??

Damnint Ward!
If it wasn't for bad luck it seems like you wouldn't have any luck!
I have a 4.3 crank I'll sell for cheap. It's a cast deal. Let me know if it'll help you out.

Woof. I hate it when stuff gets all "unmanufactured". Hopefully, the 16 straight pushrods are an indication that the damage stayed down low.

Ward,
I am sorry to see what happened to your engine . I know that hurts. If you want my 533 SCJ headed unit let me know. It's got a Performance Crankshaft forged crank, and has been 5.27-28 e.t. at Beech Bend in Randy Moore's Mustang at 2367 Lbs.

Sorry WArd
Hate to see the bad luck. I keep thinking my cast crank is going to give up too. I hope it will push me to get started on a stroker. Good luck with the new setup Ward.

Saturday morning damage report...
Pulled the intake and heads off this AM:
Cylinders 1 - 4:
Cylinder head 1 - 4:
(That's my brother-in-law's size 12 at lower right)
Cylinders 5 - 8:
Cylinder head 5 - 8:
Damage closeup (6&7):
Total score so far: one bent pushrod, one questionable rocker arm, in addition to the crank and the block.I can' see any obv. damage to the heads.no broken valves. only one bent bad enough to be raised off the seat.I'm sure most if naot all of them will have to be replaced. The crank broke right behind the front counter weight. Thanks for all the offers on help just not sure what I will be able to afford to do right now.

Re: Its never good
Ward,
I hate to be a forebearer of bad news, but I see about 5 valves that have been hitting the pistons (mostly exhaust) and you know they will be bent. They have been run that way for a while, the broken crank didn't cause that. I suspect you'll see some bad bearings to. Is the cam's dowel pin sheared? Bottom line is, a careful study and inspection of the parts and the carnage is one of the most important things you can do. We all will appreciate the opportunity to learn from what this engine is telling us.

That is a very good point. Much can be learned from an autopsy of a blowed up engine.
Good luck with it, sounds like you will have some fun (and expensive!) choices to make now!!

Re: Its never good
Well I'm no expert but I'm guessing by the rings on piston's 6 and 7 on the valve releifs and the circle that's around the edge of the 6 and 7 exhaust valves there was some contact between the two of them. Maybe it was something else that caused the crank to go and the crank was fine until something else got in its way of working fine. Well I hope it all works out for you in the end. Good luck figuring out the problem.

I plan on pulling it the rest of the way out this weekend.I was just glad to see there wasn't a broken or valves bent so bad they shoved thru the combustion chambers.Up close you can see tha several intakes were hit to.I do thik the heads can be saved with out too much.At least I have my fingers crossed. Thing still spins free with a wrench and all 8 pistons move up and down.Even the cyl. walls look ok,at least what you can see of them. The timeing chain is broken the cam has double pins.I thik the crank just broke behind the front counter wt I'll post photos when I finish pulling it, I need everybodys input this is not something I need to repeat if it can be helped.
