Not being an ass, but how did it run? They always seem to run like a raped ape right before they blow....so i've been told. That saying really dont make sense, it would seem an ape that was raped would move acwardly slow.....................

The way it ran
That is the sad thing I'm not sure what it would have run.I struggled with the susp setup in the heatthe first few times out.Did some adj. to susp. and put on a new set of double adj. coil overs. The car came around.I ran a 6.0 heads up race an ran dead on 6.0 but still with alot of tire spin.In the third rd it hooed hard front tires landed about 60 feet out it went 5.95 on the brakes at 114 mph. The three prev pass's it 6.00 6.005 6.01 all at high 119mph.The night it blew up I warmed it up told Flop I was going to make a easy motor pass before we started tuning the nos for 5.70 H\U It let go around the 60 ft mark. So I don't really know.I think that's what killed it. It relly had the power tuned up since Blake did the head work.In hind sight I guess I should have parked it untill I could have got a forged crank in it
Thanks for the offer on the block David C. called and told me to come and get his old block since he went to a motorsport block. It is a four bolt unit that is already oil restricted. What a friend!!!!!! and a relative. Oh yes the cam is still good.

Some updated pictures
Here are a few more pictures:
There are a couple of dents and one hole in the oil pan (front of oil pan, just above the seam - between one and two o'clock in this picture)

It looks odd the only mark on the rods, you can see the small scratch on the #1 rod about a 1/2 inch below the piston. It sure made a cut awat view into the block. What is so strange is it stll rotates like nothing is wrong, not even a tight spot.

The Chevy deal we did for the boss' kid broke the same way......except it destroyed the whole shortblock.
The forged crank from Adney still goin' strong.

About what RPM was it spinning when it let go Ward? Was it right at the begining of the run or down track? You must have clicked it pretty fast to avoid any more damage!!
Does it look like a crank failure alone or was there other factors?
Bill

rpm
I have the shifter set on 6200 it goes thru the lights at between 6800 and 7000.It was right at the shift point when it broke.I slapped it in nutral as fast as I could.
Jon do you not get a rash when you work on a chevy? I had to wear gloves to work on my powerglide before I switched to J/W trans
I plan on contacting Mr. Brown but first I want to see what I have left.I also need to save some $$ I have spent most of my play cash.I don't like to bother folks untill I am ready to do something.I have a fair idea of the cost I bought some stuff from him at the bash and discussed upgradeing to a forged crank over the winter.
Is it getting cold outside
The good news is I was able to swap up a 60 over 351w for Wyatt's car. Pretty mild set up ported 69 heads flat tos victor jr intake.I t wouldn't be so hard to fix mine, but I refuse to quit on his That kind of happened to me at his age and I won't let it happen to him unless my toes are turned up!

Re: Its never good
You know it's odd when they break in the front. With all the hp carring through the last crank pin , you would think if it was going to break it would break back there. But you see them break up front quite a bit.
Makes you wonder if it was a harmonic deal going bad there ?
Ward, if I can help let me know, I hate it for you.

harmonic balancer
The balancer was bad when I pulled the pully off today but it took a hard lick so I'm not sure which came first, but that is a valid point I willnot use another prof. products balancer.

On the bright side, the front of the crank will look good in the trophy case...
Best of luck putting it back together, and I admire your getting the kid's car together first.

Re: Its never good
I don't know, on the #1 rod big end it looks like there are some slight heat marks. Maybe a bearing was going bad and you didn't realize it combined with some other problems and it all added up to this. but like I said it looks very slight so maybe it happened right agt the breaking point. still sad I guess now you know the saying "broke out" more than any other bracket racer does.

Re: Its never good
Thats a crank failure, nothing to due with bearings. Could have been caused by something harmonic, but most likely just plain overworked beyond its limits.

Re: Its never good
How can a crank be over worked and break in the front of the number one crank pin? Unless it is a front assy has a balance, or harmonics problem or both. It has always been odd to me to see a crank break at that point.
Every oz. of hp is carried through the last 2.200 dia crank pin at the crank fly wheel flange.
I think this is a good lesson, for the importance of a good balancer. I for one don't know near enough about this subject.
If any one would like to school us on balancers and harmonics, I would be all ears.

Re: Its never good
It happend to find the weakest point first and in that crank it was the first throw. Caused by Poor metalurgy? poor / thin casting in that area? Inclusions / porosity in the metal? Bad machining? to tight of fillets? Detonation? Could have been dropped in shipping?
It be interesting to get all of the crank and take it in and Magnafiux and xray it. I'd be willing to be their are cracks in the other throws.

I agree with what your saying............. But the amount of stress on the front crank pin has to be a hell of a bunch less than the rear crank pin.
I will say again I think it's a harmonics problem. Makes me wonder if a torque converter full of oil works as a harmonics control to some degree?
Also, none of the BBC guys around here run cast cranks in their strokers. Is that because they have good cranks cheaper, or they are smarter than us, (a ton us of bbf guys run cast strokers ) or do their cast strokers not hold up as good as the bbf? I just never see a 800 hp cast crank BBC around here.
Just curious on other peoples opinions on this.................
