thinking of going from a c6 to glide have question.
this coming winter i wil be taking my back half car (bracket car) and putting a chassis under it. while im in that process i was thinking of taking the good ole C6 out and replacing it with a glide. plans will be to set the car up to run supergas/comp with it.
My question is, How much will i see in difference from the swap. i know there is a lot more drag with a c6 but will it hurt the performance with only the one shift coming off the stop? or will it be too aggressive with a 3 speed.
car is 83' t-top foxbody. bbf. the 514ci made 880hp with an early set of A429 cj heads running a 32x14.5 rear tire and 4.10 rear gear. over the winter i like to switch to a 33x15 tire and put the 430s back in it. theres also a bigger inch motor coming together that will later replace the 514 next summer. (slow project lol)

I think you're making a good move. A C6 probably wouldn't be a good choice for a SuperGas car where consistency is key. A calm, consistent launch is mandatory in the super classes in order to repeatedly run that number, so a good glide will be your friend. Don't cheap out on the trans, either, as they catch hell from big inch engines launching, going on and off the stop, etc.
There's a lot of really fast high dollar cars where you're going. Just watching 9.90 passes with incredibly high trap speeds tells me that the Super classes ain't the lo-buck deal they used to be. It's easy enough to go 9.90...but to be competitive is another deal altogether. Best wishes and good luck to you.

thanks for the reply. the newer motor ill be replacing the 514 with is a C headed 598. im looking for 170-175mph off the stop. as far as the trans goes, who is the to go to guy? does it makes a differences or is there one better then the other? and how often do people get out of them between rebuilds and fluid changes? i go a half season on fluid changes now, nothing wrong and probably wasting my money but rather be safe then sorry with that

In a car that fast you'll need to stay on top of maintenance. This ain't the old 514/C6 deal...it's gonna go harder on the trans for sure. More frequent fluid changes and a really good cooler are a must. Don't bother with a stock case or planetaries...some guys can use 'em successfully, but you won't. SFI cases from Reid or Dedenbear or JW are the way to go, the JW'S is probably the strongest (and heaviest). Keep an eye out for stuff that comes out with the fluid...it's telling you something.
Band adjustments take about 60 seconds...do it every time you run the valves.
Since a glide rebuild is much simpler than freshening a C6, don't be afraid to do it more often.
And considering the electronics package in a competitive SuperGasser, you might wanna hire an IT guy.

You dont need a t400 output.
Nuetral at the stripe is a must w nitrous setups, as well w alum rods imo. Wont hurt a thing w tbe powerglide to do this.

Re: thinking of going from a c6 to glide have question.
I'm with Jon on this one. Glides are simple. We have been running the same transmission for 6 years and we freshened it before this season just because it was out of the car. We run one of the part 1.58 gear sets with 400 input. Still have glide output. I've had this thing behind anything from 1000hp NA big blocks to turbo small blocks making over 2000hp and haven't worried about a thing. The only time we've had an issue is when we were changing converters one time and I put the wrong input shaft back in during the rush. Made that converter go to 9500 the entire pass. Oops. LOL
Also, I prefer the Reid style cases over those JW.
