Anyone an AOD expert?
I picked up an AOD to swap into my 69 Mustang to replace the FMX. The AOD is from a '90 Lincoln Mark VII. Seller said he bought the whole car to get the 5.0 engine for his 65 Mustang. He said oit wove the car but slipped some in OD. Not opened it up yet by no burnt odor in fluid.
I've been told being from this year Lincoln and model it prob has a "B" servo and the steel drum (better than earlier iron drum)
Right now the plan is to rebuild it with a performance type kit, add an A servo and 2" band. Also plan on a Lentech or Bauman valve body.
Is there anything else that I need to look at?
Input shaft?
Lockup or non lockup type converter?
Is worth it to put a wide ratio gearset from a 4R70W? Ford used to sell a kit to do this, but it's discontinued. Reman gearsets /kits are available ~350 ish.
I've never done an AOD, but have done several C6 and C4's. Can do a powerglide with my eyes closed.
Car is a nice driver restoration 69 Mach 1 with a '70 model 351C. 4V closed chamber heads. Small unknown rumpy idle cam. 650 Vac sec Holley, Pertonix II in a recurved distributor. Nice headers/exhaust. 3.25 gears. I want the AOD so I can do some long distance cruising if needed without stressing everything with Interstate rpm. Currently turns 2600 rpm at 65. Not going to be racing it. Just want something that will last and be trouble free.

And this is a good tech info sheet that Dan Gilsdorf from SilverFox Trans put together on general modifications to an AOD.

You will need some lip seal tools . These other parts are just some things I have used with good service

Kevlar lined bands
New molded pistons for reverse and 1 2 shift accumulator.

OD servo helps too.

Dan from SilverFox will sell you a kit of exactly what you need and nothing you don’t, as well.
