Off topic 400 M
I was in a discussion with a gentleman about the 400 M series engines. He said a friend has a 400 M that came out of a normal ford and had a 400 M with a four barrel carb on it. I said that that was not an option and ford never made a four barrel manifold for one of them. I know the aftermarket did and still might but over the years I was never able to locate a 400 with a factory four barrel.

A 351M is a "modified" 400. (shorter stroke crank for less CID) That's why they call it a 351M/400. I don't think a 4 barrel came on either one of them.

An "XE" part is not the same as a "Production" part.
One was made only for testing and marketing and the other was actually a part which was available on a normal production vehicle.
I have an "XE" cast iron 4 barrel intake manifold for a 300 cubic inch inline six. Ford had 8 of them made but, never sold one on a showroom truck.

Rumor has it a few of these made it into some early wagons

Just the picture of a XE one on Google is about a Unicorn. Thanks
PS: The story I always heard is that they were tested and rejected for police car service.

Wasn't trying to infer that a 400 4V manifold ever made it into production. Just trying to share evidence that at least one was made.

Over on the Cleveland forum, there was some discussion about this, and someone had posted a picture of a Police car with a 400-4V.
They also had a very rare 400 block with a small block bellhousing pattern.

As I understand it the 351 m got the m to differentiate it from the 351w and c engines. Modified cleveland as in raised deck. Went from 9.206" to 10.298" if memory serves.
No need for an m after the 400.
I've seen the 4v intake pics but never actually put my grimy paws on one.

Re: Off topic 400 M
The one picture on the wiki of the iron 4V intake shows a D7AE 9424 "potential" part number. That would relate to a 77 full size Ford. All three parts shown are consecutive XE numbers designed ( probably) by the same engineer at the same time. There is a PF on the EGR plate indicating the prototype foundry at Ford in MI. The manifold has $86 which indicates it is the 86th "example" of that XE number. "XE" numbers were used on ANY new part design from fan belts to flywheels and everything in between. It doesn't mean the part "worked" or is an "exotic" race part. But some are. Ignitions used XF numbers as did "some" carburetors.
