Need info for a rack and pinion to be used on a 1970 mustang with a 514.
I have a 1970 Mustang with a 514. I want to get rid of the shock towers and add a rack and pinion set up. Is there anyway that I can do this and retain my front sump oil pan? Thank you for your time. Gary Davis coloil@yahoo.com

If you get creative with steering shaft angles, I'm sure it can be done, but most front end kits require a Fox body style rear sump pan.

No. The rack and crossmember are right where the sump is. If you did a rear mount rack like from Flaming River you will still have the front shock towers.

In the past I have seen rear-steer rack & pinion kits for the early Mustangs (so a front sump pan was needed). But they were meant to be used with the factory "shock tower" type suspensions.
What type non-shock tower front suspension are you looking to use (Mustang II, or ???)? The Mustang II suspension stuff is a front-steer setup. I guess someone could try to convert the MII stuff to rear-steer, but it would probably take a bunch of work to get the steering arm angles correct so the Ackermann geometry isn't all wonky.

Mine was welded in then center cut out. It’s not a 70 model but I don’t see where that part would matter. Where it was cut it has plates capping the ends. It’s a chassis car so I guess if yours still has factory frame you’d need to do something for a crossmember to tie the two rails together.

Nice stuff but does not get rid of the shock tower if that is the goal.

You will have to make a simple crossmember to hold the rack. and move the engine back But this will get the majority of the engine weight behind the front wheels. Probably not he most high tech front end but it works pretty well.
