Camshaft end play Empty Camshaft end play

Post  Axshun July 16th 2020, 4:36 pm

Hey guys,
I'm in the process of installing my hydraulic roller cam into my 521 with a bronze thrust plate from Kaase. When I torque the thrust plate to the recommended torque of 9-12 ft. lbs., it binds the cam so it will not turn.
Is there a recommended end play for the camshaft? I can't seem to find a spec in the book and a search here didn't turn up anything. It turns fine with the lifters in until I tighten the plate.
Could the machine shop have pressed in the back plug to far, or what is the best way to get the clearance I need?

Thanks in advance!

Axshun, their are only two reasons that would cause no end play. Either than cam bore plug is in too far or the cam is machined too long. Cam retainer/thrust plate will only effect endplay when cam gear is installed. Hope this helps. PS- paint the rear of cam with a marker and install the cam and retainer . Then turn cam as u snug the retainer bolts. If the cam is hitting cam bore plug it will leave a witness mark. Good luck

Thanks for the reply....
After doing some research, I've seen people say not to put the plug in past the taper on the block. Mine definitely is past the taper, so I guess I'll be pushing the plug back out and re-installing it. I've also read where some people are installing the cam plug as an "outie". Mine is installed as an "innie". What's correct for the 460?

I have seen them installed both directions. If u knock it out replace with a new one. As they are a crush fit. I always apply a little rtv sealer around outside edge after installed. Glad u found the problem.

The "OUTIE" is an FE block thing. Never seen that on a 460

Cam plug in too far is my 1st guess. .003" end play is enough.

FE is the only engine I know of that the rear plug installs backwards.

So I installed a new plug and all is well! The machine shop had installed the old one in too far.
Thanks for the replies!
